Guest guest
Hi Bridget:Our 3 year old son is on 1 mg of liquid melatonin. We only give it at bedtime, not naptime. We found that the melatonin helped him sleep well enough at night to not need naps anymore. Hope this helps!PattiFrom: bridget <beanniferj@...> Sent: Wed, September 8, 2010 8:46:02 AMSubject: ( ) Melatonin dose for 3 year old? Hi all - We are considering starting our 3 year old son on melatonin to help him sleep, both at naptime and bedtime. He just turned 3 and weighs a little over 30 lbs. I was wondering what the appropriate starting dose would be for a little guy? Do you give it at naptime also, or just bedtime? He has a quiet time every afternoon, but he rarely sleeps during it, even when utterly exhausted. At bedtime, no matter how tired he is, he gets back out of bed and plays after we put him to bed. We really want to see him start to get the rest he needs, especially now that school has started for him. Thanks! Bridget
Guest guest
I would start at half the lowest dose you can find and work your way up - it is strong stuff- we use tryptophan and HTP first if that doesn't work then melatonin. It knocks my son out for a long time and he only take 1mg - that is only once or twice a year we go that route when he is super hyper or havign a lot of night wakings. 9 my son is almost eight and has been doign biomedical treatments for nearly 3 years now). Guest guest
Hey Bridget, I had the same problem with my daughter around that age. I was told from a doctor and a pharmasist to start with 1 mg. We tried and it worked for about 3 weeks, but it was not really working for her, so we stopped. I would try the 1 mg and see what goes from there. I would also talk to the doctor first, just to be on the safe side. Hope that helps. Guest guest
my dan! dr recommended for us to split the recommended for an adult in half or in 3rds for children 2 and 3 years. Guest guest
I feel comfortable giving my daughter melatonin at bedtime because melatonin is naturally released in the brain to help the Body to sleep. I give her 3mg tablets 30 minutes before bedtime. There are 5mg, time released and even 10 mg tablets but 3 works good for us (she is 11) . I would not give it for nap time because it can make them groggy if they don't have several hours of sleep after taking it. You might try cutting a 3mg in half or get the liquid form. I would give it over anything else because it is what the brain produces and it works well. In fact I know of several parents and doctors that use to for their ADHD kids because it is what the brain makes, nothing more than that. Vicki -- ( ) Melatonin dose for 3 year old? Guest guest
Thanks to everyone for the input. I think we will try a tiny dose to start, and see how it goes. We did get the green light from the pediatrician to try melatonin last fall, but someone at Whole Foods talked me out of it. We used the Calms Forte instead, which seemed to work initially, but then stopped working. Having not used it for a long time, we thought to try the Calms Forte again, but this time it has been completely ineffective. We feel like if we could just help our son get over the edge, he can sleep fine. Thanks again, Bridget > > Hey Bridget, > > I had the same problem with my daughter around that age. Guest guest
I did a lot of research into melatonin and I felt very comfortable giving it to my own daughter and I am even a Registered Nurse. In all the research that I did I never found anything against it. I give it to her if she is not feeling tired and believe it or not after a week or two she started to fall asleep on her own and stay asleep. I still give it on occasion when she is wired or is having trouble falling asleep. It is natural and not a foreign chemical for her body. Guest guest
We tried half of a 1mg tablet tonight and my son feel right to sleep at bedtime! I am hoping that as you have found, after a couple of weeks, my little guy might get re-wired to go to sleep when he is put to bed and not need the melatonin nightly. So far, so good. Hopefully he will be fresh and cheerful in the morning Bridget > > > > Hey Bridget, > > > > I had the same problem with my daughter around that age. Guest guest
Yeah! I remember the first time I gave it to my daughter...I didn't know how fast it would take effect so I gave it to her at 7pm while we were going over homework and by 7:30 she was in bed and slept through until the morning and got up without a fuss! After that I gave it 30 minutes before bedtime and then we would read until she fell asleep. Guest guest
Just a note about melatonin -- it did not work for us. It seems to have no effect on either my son or myself, even at higher doses. I gave up. It seems to work great for a lot of people, but clearly does not help everyone. -- (mom of 4yo Aspergian boy) From: Vicki Reiter <mom2emsar@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Melatonin dose for 3 year old? Guest guest
When my DS went through this at age 3, I actually just gave him a couple slices of turkey for his bed-time snack. It worked for him. I stopped after about 2 weeks and by then he had 'reset' his falling asleep ability and didn't need it anymore. I didn't try it for naps though--he stopped napping at age 1. Guest guest
This is a neat suggestion! We have tried the melatonin (.5mg) for 2 nights so far with excellent results. My son has fallen right to sleep when put to bed and slept for 12 hours straight. I have not given it to him for naptime, because I read that they need to have a long time to sleep after taking melatonin - has anyone tried it for naps? Guest guest
I've been taking melatonin for years. Have to be careful, the body becomes very dependent on it when given every night. I'd only give it every now and again when you start to notice sleep issues. Or try few days on, few days off to keep him from becoming too used to it and having to up the dose. Before I stopped, I was up to 20 to 25 mgs because it wasn't working and I had to up the dose. Best to come off for a bit and let your body's natural melatonin come up a bit, since taking the pills makes your body produce less natural melatonin. My supplements lady told me melatonin shouldn't even be taken by anyone under 50, but if taken occasionally, when sleep patterns are not functioning right. Guest guest
You should definitely check with a doctor before using even OTC meds on little kids, IMO. Also, our kids can be taking other meds and you want to discuss if there are any interactions as well. We have used melatonin from time to time over the years. We have better luck with clonidine (prescription med) for sleep issues. Melatonin does have that effect for us where it works for a while, then stops. We have used it but taken breaks from using it. Right now we are combining it with clonidine (per doc's orders) and initially, it is helping. We'll have to see how long it lasts!
