Guest guest
I am so glad you responded to this Jill because my Micah has been put on singulair for sleep apnea (after the removal of tonsils and adenoids didn't work)> While I have seen some improvement with the singulair he is still restless at night. My pulmonologist has said she didn't think he would tolerate it well but after reading your post I am going to question her again about it when we have our follow up next month. I know the lack of sleep affects him in school and it kills me. He gets huge dark circles under his eyes. Mine are not much better as he climbs in with us every night and falls asleep on one of us (change in posture helping his breathing.) How did Isaac take to the c-pap machine? Guest guest
OK- how does one tell if their kids have sleep apnea? BJ teacher keep saying he is tired and today she says he is over tired HE was ill on Friday so we took him to dr- she said she cant check his ears as he has heaps wax-so I have been putting the wax drops in each nite while he sleeps. He also had his thyroid blood test- but I call up about those results today BJ will generally go to bed around 8-30pm and will come in to our room sometimes none, but usually a few times. We direct him back to bed. Of late I have been putting him on the cot mattress on the floor next to my bed and he will usually sleep there fine. He will wake usually between 6-30 and 7-30am . He does snore some nites, but not every nite. He does sleep in odd positions, but not sitting up- usually a fetal position. Thanks Aussie Leis- mum to 9 , Natasha 5 and 3. He actually was hyperactive from the lack of sleep (he is active anyway lol!) but I know that tiredness and napping can be a symptom. Guest guest
Hi, You should have a sleep study. We saw a sleep specialist (neurologist) at Children's in Boston. My son does not have sleep apnea but was in bed for too long - I was putting him to bed too early because he always complained he was tired. We now put him to bed at 8pm and he is usually up by 6:00 - 6:30. He only requires about 10 hrs/night. use to wake up between 3 to 5 times per night. Now, he sleeps through about 7 out of 10 nights. The doctor did remind me that Down Syndrome children are very restless sleepers and have frequent periods of waking during the night. (I did some research on this and it is true!) As they mature, they will learn to go back to sleep on their own!!! Tricia ( DS 7 yrs old, Ciara 9 yrs, Niamh 11 yrs.) Leis <lisa@...> wrote: OK- how does one tell if their kids have sleep apnea? Guest guest
Hello Doug,,, I have had several but they aren't that bad just a pain in the ass. The first time my dad was there so it was ok but annoying. They put leads on a bunch of places and you go to sleep on their crappy bed. I use a select comfort air bed so mattresses are evil.. lol I would tell them that you need help because of the sma and try to tough it out. That's my experience... Guest guest
Hi Doug, I have also done a sleep study several times. As said, it is not painful but rather annoying. Last time I had my husband there to position me. Even so, I get such a lousy sleep that I've wondered how reliable the results are. For me the results have always been that I don't need respiratory support during the night although my pulmonary function is less than 25 % of normal. On another note, congratulations on your 50th birthday! I just was in a conference by the Trust for SMA in England and I exchanged a few words with Dr. Finkel who was there giving a presentation about latest SMA research. He asked me which type of SMA and how old I am. I said that I am 38 with SMA type II. He answered that I was the oldest SMAer with type II that he had seen... So judging by that criteria, you must be a freak then. LOL Taya from Finland Sleep Study Has anyone here had a sleep study done? I'm supposed to have one tomorrow night. What should I expect and more importantly is there something SMA specific I should inform them of? As always they know nothing of SMA. Its just going to be a nightmare for me, we have to drag all my equipment with me, it won't be my own adjustable bed, I have no one to transfer me, positioning etc, you all know the drill LOL. I have enough problems sleeping in my bed let alone another. If it gets to be too much of a chore, or is too painful, I'll just leave. Guest guest
h just had a sleep study done a few weeks ago. I think the most important thing that they weren't aware of was that they aren't looking for the same things that they normally are. With most people going in for the study, they are looking for apnea. I know that with h (and most others with SMA I would assume) it's not apnea episodes, but weakened intercostal muscles that cause the problem. It's a problem with adequate ventilation due to those weakened muscles. Do you normally sleep with a bi-pap (or cpap or vent?) If so you'll run into another problem that we had. They initially wanted to do the normal split study with h - 3 or 4 hours of " baseline " and then put her on bi-pap at ridiculously low settings and work her up. We had a 2 hour conversation before the study could ever start because we weren't going to allow that to happen. We agreed to ONE hour of baseline (which was difficult enough) and then wouldn't let them start her bi-pap anywhere below 14/4 (at least a span of 10) We did discover that while I was right and her bi-pap isn't really supporting her correctly anymore, I had it set higher than I had to to get results. When her sats started dipping on bi-pap at night I turned it up from 19 to 21 (over a few nights, not all at once) but really nothing changed after they hit 18. So she's back down to 19 for now and will probably be switched to a volume vent shortly. Good luck! Love and Hugs Jeni Sleep Study Has anyone here had a sleep study done? I'm supposed to have one tomorrow night. What should I expect and more importantly is there something SMA specific I should inform them of? As always they know nothing of SMA. Its just going to be a nightmare for me, we have to drag all my equipment with me, it won't be my own adjustable bed, I have no one to transfer me, positioning etc, you all know the drill LOL. I have enough problems sleeping in my bed let alone another. If it gets to be too much of a chore, or is too painful, I'll just leave. Guest guest
Doug-what is the study for? I told my doctor it would be pretty much a huge pain for me to do one and he got me my equipment without it. Maybe you don't " need " to go?? Good luck! Guest guest
As to the why's of my sleep study, its a long story. Since October I've had 3 rather frightening episodes of feeling like I'm losing consciousness now its happening more frequently but less severe, its it very hard for me to explain this feeling to the doctor or to anyone really. I get a feeling of " everything " rushing to my face/head, sweats, dizziness, nausea, some other things that are difficult to explain. I never actually lose consciousness and feel fine before. It feels like I'm also going to take my last breath. In all honesty it feels like I'm dying, that this is how death feels. I just throw my head back, take deep breaths and wait for it to pass. So anyway my doctor is trying to find out what it is. So far he can't find anything, I wore a halter monitor, did blood work, ABG and oxygen level (99) good, just your basic non-invasive stuff so far. Had some breathing tests done, that doctor said I breath shallow and don't expand fully cause of scoliosis. well gee I knew that. So this Pulmonologist ordered the sleep study after my Dad blurted out he heard me snore once, so right away they start with that apnea thing. This doctor said my lungs look normal and healthy for someone in my " condition " . So that was good to hear. Anyone else ever feel this way. Just wish there was some way to diagnose the problem, I hate living in fear like this day in and day out. Taya, thanks for the birthday wishes, I'm not the only " freak " there's several people older than myself on this list LOL. Guest guest
I was thinking that too. And panic attacks could be happening in your sleep if your breathing is too shallow. When I drift off accidentally before I put my ventilator on, I wake up panicked, gasping for air and trying to shake off a drowning dream. Scary! > > Is it possible that you are having panic attacks? Guest guest
Hi , I have SMA II I think, no one ever really told me. Just deduced from my own reading. I've never walked except with braces as a child. For the last 10 years I've experience debilitating bouts of dizziness too, its a similar feeling, but sometimes quite different. Maybe its the anxiety thing so many people have suggested to me. Antivert is the only drug for dizziness and it never made a dent in mine. The last ear doctor I went to said some people had luck with a vitamin supplement called Lipo Flavenoid, it helped me some where drugs didn't. Do you ever feel dizzy ? No AIM, sorry. Guest guest
Hi Debbie,I've had 4 sleep studies; 3 nighttime and one daytime study. I know it sounds like it will be impossible to sleep, but they bundle the wires and if you have to go to the restroom you just call out (because they are listening to you and watching you) and they just have to unhook the unit the wires are hooked to. And if I remember correctly you have to sort of hang on to it. But where I had mine, I walked into a beautiful bedroom complete with TV (they told me to bring a DVD if I wanted). But it was very, very nice......had an attached bathroom. They have to monitor you for a certain # of hours, I always fell right asleep and they would be waking me up around 4:30/5:00 a.m. to go home!!! It will be fine! I just always hated going home and having to shampoo all that gunk out of my hair!! The worst part is sitting there while they glue all the leads to your head/face. But it will be a piece of cake......don't worry about it. It's really important to find out if you have sleep apnea so get your CPAP. Guest guest
Hi all. I've had one night and one daytime sleep study!!! I felt like the Bride of enstein after the lenghty procedure of wiring me up. It was horrible - I know I didn't sleep much - then the next morning - which was extremely early they removed the wires all over my head with a very familiar substance - nail polish remover. I asked for shower faclities because the test was in San Francisco (I lived in San - about a 40 minute drive minus the traffic). They didn't have shower facilities so I spent the whole next day there doing the daytime study with lovely long hair that wreaked of nail polish remover. Such a lovely smell......... So then the worker said "oh, go out and have breakfast.....and then return in an hour to do the daytime study....it was horrible.....I ended up driving around San Francisco for a while before the morning traffic, ate nothing and then started the daytime study from 8am to 3pm - then I got lost driving home. San Francisco is not a great place to drive in.....at least for me. THEN YOU WON'T BELIEVE THEY LOST THE RECORDS!!!!! No joke. I would never have it again. I was working at the time and several times I dropped off while I had a customer on the line (I worked for the phone company as a service rep). I would rewaken suddenly and not know who I was talking to or what to do. I don't think it would be appropriate to tell the customer "I'm sorry I fell asleep, who are you and what were we doing/????? So I looked at the computer screen in terror and eventually figured it out without the customer knowing......I have narcolepsy, sleep apnea, lupus and severe depression. Take care, Connie B B <muttsmom55@...> wrote: Hi Debbie,I've had 4 sleep studies; 3 nighttime and one daytime study. If I go to bed before 10 or 11, I just lay there for a couple hours even with sleeping pills. I hope my insomnia doesn't blow the study. My study is recruiting parents of children with ASD/PDD to help fill out 3 questionnaires and record their children's sleep and behaviors for 2 weeks. If you think my study may interest some of your members, could you please kindly pass my study flyer to them?
