Guest guest
Laurie, Kim was on a higher dose (I can't remember how much, at least double what she is on now) - we were able to decrease it AFTER she moved out of the house. Much of her aggression was toward me - and once she was happily living " like all my friends " (that is out of the house and " on her own " ) her aggressions' lessened. She is VERY happy in her current arrangement, and WHEN we can be sure there will be no staff changes, etc because the budget is passed and funding is secure, we will try to decrease again. AID had to lay off over 40 people with the last cuts, and we still don't have an assurance for Dec thru June. Re: Risperdal Prepare yourselves... takes Risperdal, too, and has for about 6-7 years, and yes it has helped her tremendously when all else has failed. Here's the shocking part -- her current dose, for the past year and a half, is up to NINE mls./day (split a.m. and p.m.). I think she started right around where your daughter is, -- but as she moved through puberty she kept needing more and more to achieve the same results. At this point, though, Jill, I wouldn't worry one bit about long term effects -- try it if your doctor and you, your daughter agree it may help, see if it does and then when things settle a bit you can figure out a better plan if there is one. Yes, there can be weight gain, and a lot of it, but if it's a question of your child being able to continue living at home with you, safely, accessing community etc vs., well, something else...then I say some unhealthy weight gain is a fair tradeoff, at least in the short term. , have you seen any ability to decrease the dose as your daughter has gotten older? This hope is what keeps me going some days -- that eventually (and is 21) when her hormones settle down some more, we can begin weaning her down in dosage. And when you're at 9 mls. daily, 1.5 sounds pretty awesomely low. I think started at really low, and the first threshhold she found where it 'kicked in' and really worked was around 3 mls/day. Then it slowly crept up to where she's at now. Hope that helps. Laurie
Guest guest
Thanks for telling me about Kim's dosing changes. I'm not sure if will ever be able to move out of our house, or if her meds might change as a result of that...but am thinking that MY need for meds would definitely go down if and when we develop that elusive 'meaningful day' for her that keeps us all on a more even keel. ) One more way that good community supports and services can help bring costs down -- the parents don't need as much medication either! Did I make you laugh? Re: Risperdal Prepare yourselves... takes Risperdal, too, and has for about 6-7 years, and yes it has helped her tremendously when all else has failed. Guest guest
Jill, My son Ramon was on Risperdal for about 3 years, from ages 11-13, for aggression and obsessiveness. It worked very well for a while, but the weight gain was huge. We switched him to Abilify for 2 more years, and the weight gain decreased... but by 14 his aggression returned and we decided to try going med-free. It worked. He seemed to have outgrown his rages by then. By age 16 it was clear he needed a mood stabilizer, though, so we went with Zoloft and he's still on it at age 18 with good results. It's very, very difficult to find the right med and the right dose. Keep trying -- hopefully soon you'll hit on the right one. Guest guest
My daughter was on a low dose a few years ago and gained 18 lbs in 3 mos. We had to stop it because of that. > > > We have used 0.25 ml per day for 2 years > > > > I have always been nervous about it, but it did seem to calm our DD down and help with her being able to sit and sork at table which was very useful > > > > We are now phasing i out becasue we have been told 2 years is long enough > > > > Good luck > > > > > > > > > From: ladylaura842@... > Date: Wed, 17 Mar 2010 02:26:48 +0000 > Subject: [ ] Risperdal > > > > > > Can anyone who has used Risperdal for their child provide me feedback? > > My 11-year-old son is facing " behavioral school " due to his behavior difficulties, and the doctor has recommended Risperdal. > > Any help would be greatly appreciated! > > > > > > _________________________________________________________________ > We want to hear all your funny, exciting and crazy Hotmail stories. In what way? > What doseage does your child take and how old are they? Thank you for > your input. God bless. > Belinda /GA > hello Blinda, My son took risperdal when he was 10rs. of age and con't with it until he was 17, which he slowly decreased it from 3mg. to nothing. This medication was the only one that worked well in controling his rages. He is now 23y/o will be finishing his last semeter in engineering at Mi. Tech. Univ. The only medication he con't with is efexor 37.5mgs. tid or bid. The side effects were wt. gain 25-30lbs. though he did lose it when he stopped the medication. At 3mgs. at one pt. created facial tics. At the x we decreased it to 1mg. and slowing worked back to 2 1/2mgs. with no side effects. When the tics may occur you would need to stopped the medication rt. away, or they can become perm. God Bless Connie T.
Guest guest
, My son takes Resperidol, .25/nightly. It was prescribed for his anger outbursts. At first the Dr. put him on it "as needed." And it had this delayed reaction and didn't do any good. So she suggested him taking it nightly and I've noticed he's a lot calmer. We haven't noticed any side effects so far. He's been on the nightly dose for a couple weeks and he's doing great! So I hope that helps. I was really worried about medicating my son. I swore I would never do it, until about the 10th time he just about knocked his sister down the stairs, and I thought, well, maybe this wouldn't hurt! I still don't like the idea of medicating him. But he doesn't seem to be suffering for it. No side effects, he says he doesn't feel anything with it. But I notice he's so much calmer. Guest guest
I keep seeing these posts, and I can't help but wonder.... My now 12 yo ds started on Risperdal when he was 3. I don't remember what dosage he started at, but by the time we took him off it in the spring of '09, he was at 4 mg a day. He took 1 in the morning and 3 at night. We never saw any tics, and it seemed to help control his aggression, except at the end. That's why we pulled it. We think he just grew tolerant to it, or it started reacting the opposite as he his puberty. At the end, it seemed to make his anger and aggression worse. But it worked very well for quite a while. I see all these posts saying their kids are taking .25 mg, and just wonder if his aggression was so much between the ODD, PDD, and Mood Disorder that it took that much to control or if it was something else, like environmental factors (the school, for us). Guest guest
My son is 6 and has gone from .25 to 1.5mg at night. We really weren't seeing much improvement at the lower dose. The Dr said she might want to add a stimulant around Oct once we get the dosage right on the Risperdal. No, I don't like medicating him either, but his outbursts became uncontrollable.Patty and I have Sheridon 8 RTS and Blaise 6 Spitfire

Guest guest
My son was on Abilify for several years. It worked very well but caused huge weight gain and high blood sugar. We recently took him off and he lost 35 pounds in two months - still needs to lose at least 25 more. He is now taking Intuniv which seems to be working though we have had to tweak the dosage a couple of times. One of the biggest things I have noticed since discontinuing the Abilify is he is eating much less now – he was continually hungry when he was on Abilify. From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of deabakcp@...
