Guest guest
I don't have experience with ABA, but we do like the " Model Me Kids " DVDs program. They have been helpful with my Aspie son's social skills. > > Wondering how to go about doing this myself. Our son is verbal and is learning quickly, but still has problems with conversational skills. Just trying to talk about something that just occurred is difficult, and it's not a memory issue, it's communication difficulty. He is very bright and already starting to read at 4.5yrs. Not sure if there is a program that can be used at home for aspie children. > > Thanks, > >
Guest guest
Thank you for the info on the DVD series. I took a quick look and we are going to get one and try it out. I especially like the Model Me Going Places, sometimes that can be very challenging! ~ From: jm.smoldt <jm.smoldt@...>Subject: ( ) Re: Anyone do ABA type therapy at home themselves? Guest guest
Hi ,As a former ABA therapist and now mother of 3 year old girl with PDD-NOS, I feel pretty confident doing ABA at home. However, I hired a senior therapist for an hour a week to guide my area of focus. I feel comfortable doing the work (and really it's about your own values and what you as a parent would like to work on) but like the help of someone guiding my progress. If my daughter needed a lot of therapy I'm not sure I could do it. It's pretty emotionally draining!Feel free to email me if you have any specific questions nephtys99@...Cheers and Good luck!Isabelle
Guest guest
We did a home ABA program with my now 13 yo ds (autism, hyperlexia, gifted.) He started out autistic, though - no language except echolalia and reading. But he advanced really quickly and ABA was exactly what he needed at the time. He needed a step by step guide to the world. he quickly put things together once he was taught. I saw " quickly " but I guess I should add that we did work for a number of years with a program before things clicked. An ABA program is not specific to any disability and since it is designed individually, it meets the child where he/she is and moves on from there. there are a lot of good communication books out there too. We used a variety of things (this was a number of years ago now, though.) We used, " Teaching children with autism to mind read " , " Behavioral Intervention for Young Children With Autism: A Manual for Parents and Professionals - Paperback (May 1996) by Maurice, Green, and C. Luce " - our main ABA book really. We also incorporated other texts as he went. A language book we used was, " Teach Me Language: A Language Manual for children with autism, Asperger's syndrome and related developmental disorders. by , Ph.D. Freeman, Lorelei Dake, and K. Freeman " which may be more what you might like. It has tons of language lessons. We also found a book called, " Super skills " to be really helpful in assessing overal social skills and with tons of ideas for working on social skills. Since your son is verbal, you might try looking into " verbal behavior analysis " which is really ABA with a heavy lean towards verbalizing. We used to have a guy on the list who wrote a book on VBA - Educate Toward Recovery: Turning the Tables on Autism - Paperback (Nov. 15, 2007) by MA, BCBA, Schramm. But I have seen many other books on verbal behavior analysis come out since then, too. We just don't need them anymore so I don't know which one is " the " best of them all. His is nice and has the basic " how to do VBA " in it. But I would think any one of them would have the basics of how to do a VBA program and you could start there. Check your library and see what they have and get a feel for what you might like. I would also add, it might seem really difficult to do this. I found that just by diving in, things eventually got going and he did well. It is intimidating at first. But it's not hard, just tedious really. And eventually, I learned how to liven things up for him and teach things in different ways. Good luck! Let us know how it's going and ask questions anytime!
