Guest guest
My son is also 8 and within the past year his hyperactivity and more of his Asperger traits are coming out. I'm not sure if it's because when they are younger, those types of behaviors are more acceptable so they don't notice them as much. My son tried Tenex for 8 months, and we added various other medications along with it. None worked. But every medicine works different on different kids. Right now my son takes Clonodine (to help him sleep), Fluoxetine (for mood), and Strattera. I honestly don't notice a difference in him at all. Also, diet never worked for us either. Depending on the traits your son is showing, they can use different medicines to try and control that behavior. When my son got really hyperactive, we tried stimulants, like Vyvanse. Stimulants actually made it worse for him. So I guess we are in the same boat! > > I was wondering if maybe you guys could give me some insight about something. I went to Brady's iep meeting today. He has come very far in school this year, and we set our goals for next year. He is not in the Autism program at school, just LD. We started him on Tenex about 2.5 months ago, because his behavior at home was very hard to live with. He was holding it together at school - and it was exhausting him...and then he would let loose at home, and he was always in meltdown mode. Now, as to be expected...he is starting to show some autistic tendancies at school. He hasn't ever really done this before. Mostly making noises...and fixating on things that he is hearing, bothering other kids, talking talking talking talking. I am having a hard time grasping this...because life at home has actually become somewhat enjoyable and dependable with him. We knew that this could come out if we ever decided to try meds (he is 8, and we tried to stay away from them for as long as possible...but became exhausted). Thoughts? It's confusing, because I am somewhat relieved that the school can FINALLY see that he really has this disorder as he hasn't ever really shown them his true nature. Do you know what I mean? Any thoughts - suggestions? Do I take him off the tenex, and go back to complete chaos at home. Do I add something...does anyone have any other ideas as to what may or may not work. Diet IS NOT an option - it hasn't worked with us. He would rather starve than stray from his 19 or so foods that he will eat. He is very high functioning.... > > It almost seems like there is a hyper activeness that he hasn't ever had before - and I can't really tell if it's a good thing, a boy thing? Guest guest
My son has been on Tenex for about 6 months now, he is 12. The Tenex is supposed to help with impulsitivity. It helps with my son. I see no other changes in behavior or moods. He has been on other meds in the past, all reluctantly, and I've seen side effects I did not like. I was very reluctant to try the Tenex, but we started on a very low does and graduallly work to 2mg a day. One 1mg every 12 hours. Talk with your doctor, maybe it's a timing issue of when he is taking the meds. We do Tenex with two Aminal Parade fish oil supplements Bobbie in NJ > > I was wondering if maybe you guys could give me some insight about something. I went to Brady's iep meeting today. Guest guest
So, are these fish oil supplements smaller than the ones that you can find at the store? I have tried those...plus the chewy gummy vitamins ones...he'll take the regular gummy vites, but not the omega 3's. I think it's because they are " sour " and I haven't been able to find them in the regular flavor. He takes .25 mg at 4 pm and .5 mg at 8 pm. I feel like that the tenex has really brought him down a notch without changing him - meaning that the noises are less frequent...meltdowns less frequent...climbing on me, you know. The only other thing that we use is melatonin at night to help him sleep. I can't say whether or not I think that it is good or bad that he is showing his true nature, because maybe that makes me think that he feels more comfortable, and less stressed? But, it is distracting the other kids at school...and there have been a few anger issues...not more than you can count on one hand, but he is a " pleaser " . In the mornings, he has had a much easier time getting up and going to school...he has seemed overall much happier and " easy going " - use that term lightly - since going on the meds. hmmmm. I am wondering if it's going to just be something that's going to have to be an all day thing, instead of just an at home thing. > > > > I was wondering if maybe you guys could give me some insight about something. Guest guest
Since he was prescribed Tenex, it has been Xdose at 8am and the smae does at 8pm. I guess it keeps it consistent in his system. I was told that it may make him tired at first, but we did not see that. Probably because he satrted on .25 mg twice a day and every week we added .25mg. Now it's 1mg am and 1mg pm. My son souds like yours (we all say that a lot here..lol) He takes the Nordic Naturals chewables two in the am. The Fish oils are small, at first he would bite them and spit out the plastic parts. We used the example of swallowing a tic tac to get him to take them and not chew. They dont taste that great even thougth they are lemon flavored. There is a flax oil DHA/EPA that is like a strawberry smoothie flavor. We've used that one too. The Tenex has helped him be less impulsive at school, which has been a big issue. He is still easily aggitaed, mostly by kids that can't be clear enough to him. School has been easier this year and I was not expecting that in 6th grade. His teachers are wonderfully patient with him. More so than I ever could have hoped for. Oh, my point on the tenex was...ask your doctor. We staterd low and worked up. Stop when youthink it is most effective, not going over the 1mg. We did stop at ..75 for a couple of weeks, but did end up iwth the 1mg. Guest guest
This certainly sounds familiar. My dd hasn't been on any meds yet, though. As AS children grow older, the gaps between them and NT children will become more noticeable. The OT, ST, adaptive phy ed teacher, etc. are trying to do our best to close that gap as much as possible, but they've said that the gap will still be there. I find myself 'correcting' my dd more often now, trying to help her know what is expected/not expected behavior in situations, but I feel like I'm constantly doing this and I feel that it could/is affecting self esteem, which I don't want to happen either. I love her so much and don't know how to help so people don't act so mean/manipulative/etc. around her. -Kari > > > > I was wondering if maybe you guys could give me some insight about something.
