Guest guest
, i've never heard of that medication but it you get any information please share. We switched our son off Ambiliry recently too due to weight gain, We put him back on resperidon but the weight issue is still there, just not as bad. I'd love to find a med that works but does't cause the weight gain. ne From: dweeny123@... <dweeny123@...>Subject: ( ) Need feedback on new drug Fanapt for teen Date: Thursday, December 9, 2010, 12:16 PM We are weaning our son off Abilify after weight gain. It has not helped his self-esteem at all to have this issue on top of everything else! He's in 9th and having a tough time adjusting socially. His psyc. recommended the new drug Fanapt to replace the Abilify and reports good results with some of his teens. Has anyone heard of it or tried it?TIA
Guest guest
I wonder why psychiatrists don't trial a mood stablizer such as depokote to control outbursts? Perhaps they just don't work. I know that depokote and other mood stabizers do not put weight on or have the potential for tardive (movement disorders) I am going to have to ask our psychiatrist. I have a friend whose daughter also gained weight on Abilify and since it worked the doctor switched her to Lithium. Why lithium instead of something else I don't know but it did lift the girls depression and reduced her evening outbursts. Pam > > We are weaning our son off Abilify after weight gain. Guest guest
Just to clarify, both Depakote and Lithium are known to cause weight gain as well. The mood stabilizer that is known to be weight-neutral is lamictal. It has the potential of a deadly rash, though, and so you just need to be careful with a good dr who will raise the dose extremely slowly. When talking about anti-psychotics (also known as anti-neuroleptics) such as abilify, geodon, zyprexa, rispderdal, invega, seroquel, they are all bad for weight gain in children. For adults, abilify is said to be weight-neutral. I'm curious about fanapt and will have to look it up. The only reason I know this stuff is that my other son has bipolar. I've done a lot of research. I would have listed links to info, but I have a lot on my plate today with the second IEP meeting (for two different kids) in a week! You can check out The Bipolar Child website as well as bpkids.org, though, for info on the anti-psychotics and mood stabilizers. HOpe that helps.
