Guest guest
Ya know......I have a question. Kind of off the subject, though. My 10 year old son was formally dx'd 2 years ago with Slow Processing / ADHD. Never got an IEP until this Sept because with the small school district, all the teachers knew us, our fam and he situation. They accomodated him by seating, help here and there, and basic "understanding". I brought it up over the years "What is he gonna do in 6th grade when he's got to take notes, etc? I brought up how he literally cannot spell. Cannot do math (other than basic) - and even then, still has to count to himself to know what 7 plus 3 is. I was assured that some kids struggle more....etc. I've been given things to try, different RTI's.......like things to do to help with spelling, etc. We've done them. THey helped a bit. Anyway,,,,,,,I've said "Should I let him just do the homework HIS way and let you see that he CAN'T do it?" I've also told them that doing that seems cruel to HIM. Especially seeing that he tries, but literally can't do it without guidance for everything..... They agreed and said that allowing him to fail wouldn't be good for him. Sigh. One note. At his IEP (for 5th grade this year) it was brought up that for 6th grade he was need to be a room that had an aide. Also, I said that he would need teachers notes given to him at the start of class for each class so that he didn't struggle trying to write them and keep up. (He is VERY slow with writing.) So.....here's my issue. Maybe it was just that I was overwhelmed last night after sittting with him and his Math homework for 2 fricken hours..........and I basically did it all....or "prompted" him the whole way. But, I was panicking more that I ever had. He honesltly doesn't know what he's doing. Then, I felt bad, cause I yanked my son with AS out of school after 5th grade for social reasons. Best 2 years home for him. THen, he went back in 8th grade fine. I'm thinking....is it time to pull out another son? My 1st son could teach himself basically. Not Jack. I'm very torn. He isn't learning - is that the schools' fault, his disability, or both? He Does work better 1-1....... Sigh....... I'm angry at myself for being through this once before.........sticking up for Ian.....finally pulling him out. I thought all the crap I went through with him would MAKE me better to handle our other kids' issues........and maybe it has. Maybe, like I said, I'm just overwhelmed right now. But, I struggle as to when to make a change. Fighting I can do. Meetings I can do. Hell, hours of homework I can do. But........making the desicion to pull him and teach him at home is a hard one. So.......if anyone has any comments, suggestions, or can relate,,,,,,,I'd love it!!!!! Robin "Normal is just a cycle on a washing machine....." Where is the teaching in that? If you would do that, why not call it homeschooling vs. e-schooling. I guess because someone else is grading your work? I'd take the extra time to find an e-school with live teaching if that is what is important to you. I haven't seen the other kind. Some may be "live" with direct teaching in real time. Others are simply assignments being e-mailed back and forth.
