Guest guest
P.S. I just re-read your email. I understand she has all of these binders (I don’t understand why the teachers request it – we request either a morning and afternoon binders that are each 3 inches or else individual 1 inch binders for each class – not 3 inches per class, but I don’t know your school. .. .. I have had students buy that size even though their teachers told them a 1 inch binder was ok with a folder, but the student’s anxiety or poor listening skills garbled the message. I am assuming that you received a supply list and it was written down as 3 inch binders. Again, I only know how my own school works.) Anywho, I find that students carry too much blank paper in each binder. Keep blank paper in a folder and replenish it each evening – it will make a big difference in the weight of her bag. It’s more work on you, but it really can make a difference. I have seen supply lists that students need 3 reams of lined paper for the school year and the students carry the supply with them from day one. I had another student with so much paper that we cleaned out her bag and she left the reams of paper in my room and still had so much that she never needed. She donated it to my class and 180 students had access to it and it lasted four months! Ditto for pencils. One girl had so many pencils, over 100 in her bag! Also we teachers encourage students to always have a book for SSR: sustained, silent reading. Some students carry the thickest book imaginable, like from the vampire series. Not the intent. Also, some of our mainstreamed IEP students have a pass to leave class two minutes early if they can’t deal with the crowds in the halls. Discuss this with the IEP teacher or guidance counselor. Let us know what works! E.C.
