A University of Sunderland researcher asked 3,000 young teenagers how often they suffered breathing difficulties. He found that one in four had lifetime asthma and one in three had permanent wheezing. Dr Mohammad Shamssain found a further quarter complained of wheezing after exercise. He said there were similar results for the condition rhinitis, an inflammation of the nose cavity, and the skin complaint eczema. Dr Shamssain says: " A high proportion of parents are unaware of the presence of symptoms of asthma in their children, which contributes significantly to the problem of under diagnosis.
