Guest guest
Has anyone here ever heard anything about or used the intermediate to long-term treatment center in San Marcos, Texas called San Marcos Treatment Center. I have friend whose son is AS also and they are severe issues right now. The developmental ped at our base (we are Air Force) told the mom that she didn't think a short-term facility would help this child - he's 10, and that he needs long-term placement. We tried looking up the facility, but can't find any reviews by anyone other than ex-employees or friends of current employees. Those reviews aren't very encouraging, though. Guest guest
I went to college in San Marcos and it used to be called the Brown School, I think. That might be why you haven't seen as much about it. I think I applied for a job there but I was going to have to be trained on how to restrain kids and realized it wasn't something I was interested in. That was back in 1992 though. I honestly did not hear great things about that place after that (I was a social work major at the time) but again, that was a long time ago. I had the feeling there were good people trying to make a difference, but they didn't have the resources they needed. That makes sense b/c I just looked them up and it looks like their parent company went bankrupt in 2005. Wish I could share more, but that's all I know. Guest guest
I don't know anything about Texas as we live in MN. However, last year our son who has AS and SPD became VERY violent. He attacked me at a grocery store and left me with bruises all up and down my legs. Then, on two different occasions, he attacked some aides at school. In the second incident he gave one of the aides a bloody nose. The police were called. He was suspended. And we were at our wit's end! We decided (with some prodding from others) that an inpatient facility would be a good idea. WRONG!!!!! They deal with behaviors there. They don't care about the underlying problems, diagnosis or anything. They were putting him in hold and isolation SEVERAL times a day! Then they started calling us and asking if they could try this med and this one. Well, we did some research before we let them. The first one was Depacote. We found out later that this psychiatrist saw our son after he had been held and was in isolation and she didn't like the look in his eyes (really!?!?!) and said that he needed Depacote. After reading a bit about it, we said absolutely not! Then they tried Risperdol. We think that he was much worse on that med and finally were able to get him off it a couple months later. He does Abilify now and it's better. It was HELL for him at that facility! Then he went to a Day Treatment Center and it was just more of the same thing. He was in hold 5 and 6 times a day there. IT was AWFUL!! So, our experience was not a good one. But, we really felt that we were doing the best we could at the time. We lived and learned (A LOT!). I'm not sure about the whole situation in Texas and with your friend's child, but if this place deals only with behavior and has little regard for diagnosis and treating each child as an individual with their own diagnosis then I would urge them not to do this. However, everyone has to do what they think is right and if they are truly having severe issues then they have to try something (just like we did). I wish them luck and hope that things turn out ok! Guest guest
As a professional working in the field,k I've had a good experience with our May Institute here locally. There's one in Killean, TX http://www.mayinstitute.org/location.html?id=776 & state=TX. These professionals are training in ASD. I know it's a couple of hours away, but it might be worth it to get the appropriate treatment.Hope this helps!
