i looked it up and though on the uncommon side, weight gain is a listed side effect of intuniv.  so much for us that we had to go off it.  my dd started intuniv 6 months ago, she was 10 but only 54 lbs..  at the point we said this couldnt go on any longer and took her off she was 104 lbs.  yes she gained 50 lbs, almost doubling her weight, in 6 months.  the psychiatrist didnt think that was enough issue to warrant taking her off but we were concerned about her health.  not only being so overweight now but long term effects and the extra weight effecting how active she was plus she already had borderline cholesterol before this (we havent had it retaken yet, will in january).  so it was our choice to take her off.  having taken her off there is no adhd catagory medicine she can take now (straterra worked for about a year but then made her moody and increased violence and she cant take stimulants as they effect her mood).  after 3 wks off it she hadnt lost a lot, only 2 lbs but i was happy to just know she wasnt gaining anymore, 2 lbs lost was just icing on the cake.

though i have history with this issue which causes me concern.  my sister has very severe asthma so was on meds her whole childhood, including many times on prednisone which just increased her weight gain.  she had no choice though as this was lifesaving to her.  in the end though she gained so much weight that it was adversely effecting her asthma, causing the need for more meds and a horrible circle of events.  it also was starting to cause other health issues, intercranial hypertension.  so at that point, in only her 20s, she ended up having a gastric bypass b/c she had tried everything else to lose the weight but if she lost some shed gain it back with the meds.  once she lost significant weight after the bypass her asthma improved as it tends to in adulthood but hers hadnt b/c of the weight.  at that point she was able to do with less meds and break the cycle.  i know my dd doesnt have those issues but i do not want to set her up for weight that wont come off and causes issues into adulthood.  i am monitoring her weight now.  got her a new trampoline for xmas as well as a new scooter and if that doesnt help i will start taking her to the gym with me (we belong to the y so kids 10+ can use equipment with supervision).  i am sure the decreased activity level is effecting her moods

Does anyone know of have experience with Tenex or Intuiniv causeing weight gain or increased hunger??My son has been gaining heaps, beyound any puberty level. He is 12 and was always a stick figure. He was on Trileptal and I thought that caused som. WHen he went off he started to slim down again, but over the last several many months he has gained a lot and is always eating.

Eating to an OCD behavior. " The clementines are there so I have to eat them along with the cereal that is there " ....type of thing.Any thoughtsBobbie

Thanks ,

My son was a stick figure before going on Trileptal. I took him off that

thinking it caused weight gain., He has cerebral spikes and the Dr's now think

he woun't have a seizure. He may, but if he does then they can rediscuss the

meds.

After the trileptal, he went on Tenex, no weight loss just a continuning

increase. This past weekend the Dr discussed switching from Tenex to Intuniv.

We'll see what happens

Thanks

Bobbie
