Guest guest
Hi, I noticed that my post got folded into another person's topic who is also new to the group. Below is my post. Sorry to repeat. My son Zachary (12 mos) has been diagnosed with RAEB, a precondition of AML leukemia. He is scheduled to start chemo in 2 weeks. They expect him to be in the hospital for at least 6-7 mos., with a few days home between cycles of treatments. I would love to hear from others who have been down this path, and especially hear about how the first days in the hospital went for you. Thanks--
Guest guest
Hi , My son was diagnosed with MDS, which is a precondition of AML at 5 months. We had to drive over an hour to his treatments in Chicago and we usually went back for a fever admit once between each treatment. The first days in the hospital for us were not so bad. Everyone was so caring and attentive to 's needs. When started chemo, I was on my second treatment for breast cancer. Everyone welcomed me with open arms. People actually thought I had shaved my head for , which was OK. Take it one day at a time with Zach. He is a little older and will realize something isn't right. Just be there for him as much as you can as it will be scary for the little guy. SP said everything I would say and actually, the only reason I would say it is because she taught me! Thanks . You can email me directly if you want. Bluyz1966@... I also have a caring bridge site for . These are free and easy to set up for Zach. That way, as he is going through treatment, your family can keep up to date on what is happening with out you having to call them all. site is www.caringbridge.org/visit/lindadolezan -Check it out. If you make one for Zach, please let the group know as we will all be wanting to know how things are going. In a message dated 6/29/2008 1:01:06 A.M. Guest guest
was diagnosed with AML when he was 31 months old. We spend approx a week a month in the hospital but because we lived 4.5 hrs from the hospital would stay in Vancouver for a total of 3 weeks a month then come home for 1 week. We stayed until his blood counts started to rise and he didn’t need to be transfused anymore. It was pretty smooth sailing except for the 5th cycle which knocked the crap out of him and he had to spend about 2.5 weeks as an inpatient. The first few days were scary while we learned what to expect, seeing the other kids with different kinds of cancer, getting a permanent line put in his chest, seeing how he reacted to Chemo but did really well. He was a trooper. The only time he got sick was when I forgot to give him the anti-nausea meds before he had a lumbar puncture. I think the worst parts of Leukemia were having to have lumbar punctures and bone marrow aspirations. The chemo wasn’t really that bad in the grand scheme of things. I just kept thinking how lucky I was to have been able to have had my son in my life every day as there are some people out there that weren’t so lucky. Feel free to ask any questions. Guest guest
Sorry, I didn't see 's email before I replied. As you can see, having a CaringBridge site is a great resource. , even though we don't know each other, I have to say that you have become a true inspiration to me during these challenging times. I have been recently following your story. Thank you so much for sharing it. (I heard about your family through the DS-Health list serv and watched your story on Grace.) Thank you, thank you!!! Guest guest
My daughter just finished treatment for AML, and is doing great.  I agree with the others that day to day stuff would really be helpful.  We found that we were living out of the hospital and eating cafeteria food all the time and just got so sick of it ... literally  Anyways, if someone could cook you some individual (healthy) meals that you could freeze and have up there with you, that would be great.  Also the day you get to go home from a cycle is kind of crazy, it would be nice for someone to help get groceries etc.  We always came home from a 3-4 week inpatient stay and the kitchen would be empty ... AND, Chelsea's counts were still super low, so I couldn't take her with me to get groceries or anything else I needed to do.  It just isn't safe.  Like the others, we kept a journal online, www.cbranam.blogspot.com  Carey http://www.cbranam.blogspot.com/ http://www.marykay.com/cbranam516/default.aspx [ ] Zachary, new to group  Hi, I noticed that my post got folded into another person's topic who is also new to the group.
