Guest guest
Hi everyone, We are currently having our dd (age 7) assessed by the local school district for ASD, to see if she will qualify. She has been diagnosed with AS medically. She is currently homeschooled. When assessed by school district 3 years ago, they didn't find her eligible (she was receiving services under the Early Childhood Developmental Delay at that time). They raved about her intelligence and didn't accept our concerns. This time around, I'm not sure how it will turn out yet. I am getting some comments from the various testers about her intelligence again, and not seeing the ASD. Forunately my son's Early Intervention teacher is " on my side " and sees our dd on the spectrum, and has filled in a GADs form for us, and given permission for the staff to call her etc. Our dd performs well with the testers and is enjoying the one-on-one attention from the staff. I'm not sure whether having more tests done by an Independent Evaluator would show her Asperger traits. Her problems show up in real life, and particularly, when family members are present. I am planning to try to put together some home video on a DVD to give the school staff. Anyone have experience requesting an Independent Educational Assessment, after school didn't find child eligible for services? Any success? At this point, we are thinking to enrol her in school, if we can get the school to recognize and address her special needs. Thanks,
Guest guest
, Independent evaluations will not help unless they are the most appropriate ones. One of the most accepted diagnostic tools for Autism, of any level, is the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS). This is administered by either a Neurodevelopmental pediatrician or a doctorate psychologist who is reporting to a Neuro Pedi. The important thing here is that, in order to obtain the AS label, the assessment and diagnosis must come from a Neuro Pedi no matter who procters the test. The procter just must be certified to administer it. Now, one of the best compliments to the ADOS is the Autism Diagnostic Interview, Revised (ADI-R), which is the parent interview. Combine those together and you will have a solid case to present to the District and an administrative judge, if you have to file for due process. The District may have a Neuro Pedi come to the school on their dime as part of the initial evaluation. But that professional will most likely rule in the District's favor. One saw my dd, felt the bumps on her head, and said that on a one-to-one basis, she doesn't have autism. Of course, he would say that. He used no standardized diagnosis test and did not review the records. So I filed a formal dispute that is now in her records and will be noted by the admin. judge if I have to go that far. I hope that this has help and contact the group if you have more questions or would like more details.
