Guest guest
Do you mean that once they get a cough it can turn into a tic? Lynne BanksSD Rep. www.americanadoptioncongress.org ( ) Pattern/Coughing My 11 yr old dd has a cough, the pattern has ALWAYS been that when she gets this cough, which comes with runny nose ,minus a fever, lack of appetite, or lack of energy, she coughs every few seconds,,none stop until you want to scream STOP!!!! I spent yesterday with head phones on and music turned up really loud to drown her out just so I wouldn't loose it. Last night, for about 20 minutes she literally was standing in the bathroom looking at herself in the mirror coughing. My dh finally said "enough" and she stopped. Then she went to the other extreme which was hold in any cough, which makes her gag and throw up in her mouth,,which ultimately comes out on clothes, blankets etc.... How do I stop this? Do I stop this? I was suppose to go with other dd and hubby to a college tour and A was going to my parents, which she absolutely loves to do, but I can't ask my parents to handle this. grrrrr Lynne BanksSD Rep. www.americanadoptioncongress.org
Guest guest
no - most of the time coughs are just coughs - due to cold or whatever - but the actual cough itself can be a tic - done not out of medical need due to an illness but repetitively due to the brain's making the child do so. in order to have tourette's they must have an auditory and physical tic for a year or more, but sometimes coughing tics are the beginning stages. It is like throat clearing and becomes almost habitual and repetitive. The below story mentions runny nose etc so this would not be that kind of cough, but if a child seems to cough a lot out of the blue with no concurrent symptoms, it can be a tic. Then the thought come to me that what if the child has arunny nose due to an allergy and a tic because she has tics and it has never been looked at. tics are not life threatening and are pretty common but I found that when we put my son the GF/Cf diets and supplements most of them went away, so for my thought process it is just one of those things to check out and keep in teh back of you mind. Not many people cough every few seconds without other symptoms, but if her nose is runnign it could just be post nasal drip bothering her throat and she just is more sesitive to that with sensory issues.
