Guest guest
I just got a phone call from my daughter's teacher about writing assignment and a mix up of sorts. After school started her spec ed homeroom teacher suggested I organize Maddie's folders, etc in a binder. I did and since her language arts teacher asked that something stay home, Maddie got very upset and shut down completely. I am thinking she used that as a catalyst for her real issue. She hates descriptive writing with a passion unless it's something she likes. Her teacher assigned her to describe her shoe and she wouldn't do it. shut down..growling..the whole bit? Anybody else dealing with this? Guest guest
This is a common problem for kids with organizational problems and language delays to have. There are so many reasons for this to be a problem, actually. It would be hard to tell you which problem it is for your particular child! some kids can't organize their thoughts. some can't sequence events. Kids with AS/HFA are sometimes paying attention to things that don't even matter to the story. Some don't have a very large vocabulary available to use, can't write things down physically so they write as little as possible and avoid writing assignments, some have no clue how to start, do not know what to write because of social delays, and on and on. I would suggest you get a full educational evaluation to see what areas are causing problems. A sped teacher could then work to help her overcome the areas of delay she is having. I deal with this kind of problem all the time with my kids. Some things we have found success with: chunking the assignment for him, providing a word bank to use, making a story web, making the assignment about a factual event, not an imaginary one. In your example of having to describe the shoe, it is entirely possible that she does not have a lot of good vocabulary to use or even get how to start such an assignment. You could cut several pictures out of magazines or online and describe those shoes with her to give working examples of how this works. Write down words that can be used to describe shoes (a word bank) and discuss what they mean. Decide whether words apply to her shoe in particular. Use a story web with a picture of her shoe in the middle. Then brainstorm with her to write down adjectives. A sped teacher would be great to help with this but if you can't get help yet, you can sit down with her and work through it as well. Guest guest
My son is very articulate, has a big vocabulary and is a fluent reader, however, has poor comprehension/understanding of the big words he uses and has meltdowns with any written work (poor speller, difficulty with comprehension, and finds writing uncomfortable - hurts his hand etc) Miranda > > I just got a phone call from my daughter's teacher about writing assignment and a mix up of sorts. Guest guest
Does your child prefer maths? My child is very rigid and I think the black/white of maths appeals, rather than shades of grey with language (eg spelling). My son is more willing to do maths than English comprehension tasks (reading is the only " English " activity he enjoys). Some of it could be lack of confidence and not wanting to be wrong - ie perfectionism? Guest guest
: Is she able to describe the shoe/object orally? Sometimes, it can be a case of seeing so much (stimulus) when you look at the object being described that it's overwhelming. Perhaps using a very simple graphic organizer (not one that overwhelms her visually will help? For example, a box at the top of the page [shoe] with 3 lines coming down for 3 details (size, color, use). If she can write these 3 ideas first, then it may be easier for her to create sentences about them. I really find that giving my son time to think and plan first is key. I train teachers on how to teach reading and writing, so I have a bunch of different graphic organizers for different grade levels. Email me (glad1@...) if you'd like me to send you a few.
