Guest guest
I haven't personally read this book yet, but my mom is reading a book called "Aspergers Syndrome and Adolescence" by Bolick, PhD and she says it is a great read! She helps my son with his homework now and it has given her a lot of understanding about how/why D acts the way he does and tips on how to work with him. From: readingmom3boyz <carrie.belknap@...> Sent: Tue, September 7, 2010 9:15:43 AMSubject: ( ) Newly diagnosed 18-yr-old son Hello everyone-I am new to this group and new to the autism-spectrum world. I guess I've lived with it for 18 years but just didn't know the name for it. Our son, Jordan, was diagnosed by a neuropsychologist a couple of months ago with Aspergers, though, his psychologist thinks it is PDD-NOS, Our son is very resistant to the diagnosis and seems angry about it. He keeps telling us it is wrong but then later says he thinks it is correct. He really struggles socially. He's also a very anxious kid. He has started a social/language group, though doesn't think he needs to be there.I have a question and I'm not sure where to get help on this one. Jordan obsesses about his relationship with me, his mom. He thinks we're not connecting and that everyone else in the world 'gets' him but that I don't. He doesn't feel loved by me. He also is very critical of everything I do to try to reassure him. This is all new behavior since the diagnosis. I don't know what I am doing wrong, I love him to pieces. I did push for the assessment so I think there may be some anger towards me about the diagnosis. His dad and I are having a hard time not getting frustrated with him over this issue.I am starting counseling this week so I'm hoping the counselor will be able to help some with this issue. This isn't the only major thing going on in our lives right now, so it will be good to have someone to talk to.I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this and if there were things you found helpful in dealing with the situation. He's a very late diagnosis and most information/books I find deal with younger kids. Thanks for any help,
