Guest guest
Hi All- My name is and I am married and have 2 boys- ages 6 & 3.5- my older son- age 6, was dx with Asperger's back in April by a ped. neuro that we went to for a 2nd opinion. We also rec'd a dx later on in June from a Dev. Ped. Both dr's have been a little fuzzy in their dx- one said AS with HFA (I thought there is a difference) and the other said he is borderline between AS & PDD-NOS. Problem is- he can change at a moments notice-in a very unpredictable way. So it all depends on what day he is being evaluated! Here is a " brief " version of our journey: As a baby and toddler- I noticed very odd behaviors- but everyone brushed it off as he was just " quirky " and I was worrying too much. He was obsessed with things that spun, he never interacted or even seemed to notice other kids or people unless it was in some way a benefit to him (i.e. you were willing to turn on the fan for him or a child had something that spun) and he started to speak at an early age and had/still has a vocabulary that was/is off the charts. By age 2.75- he became a big brother... the quirkiness continued and his behavior (i.e. 6+ daily meltdowns) continued. At age 3 he started pre-school. We had to scramble at the last moment for another pre-school because he was not potty trained. We were lucky- I guess to find another school to take him. By this time- the struggles were immense- but as usual- there was always an excuse. Now everyone was saying that he was just having issues adjusting to his new baby brother. I did not agree- but was so overwhelmed and exhausted that I just went along with it all. I finally broke down in May of 2008 and went to my ped for a consult and cried my eyes out. She said I was not an effective parent. I left feeling despair. I tried soem of things she suggested- but it didn't work. I was reading every book I could get my hands on. I went back to her 2 months later- again- it was my bad parenting and she blamed my hubby too. She sent us to a bunch of specialists- but still no one was helping us. Six months of struggling- and then one day- a dear friend of mine suggested I read 'The Out-of-Sync Child " . I typed it into my search engine. I was skeptical. I decided it wasn't for me. Then I began to randomly type " behavior issues " in children and ironically the Out-of-Sync child kept coming up. I got the book & read it in one night. I went to the SPD website an did the check lists. I was awestruck- How come I didn't know about this!!!? Let the battle begin... I printed out all kinds of stuff and brought to our ped- she would'nt even look at it. So I pursued it on my own. I found an OT clinic to do the testing and in June of 2009 he was dx with SPD. We started OT and then later added BT & LT. In OCt. 2009 we began the CST process at out local school district. On Christmas Eve 2009- they called me and said these words: " We are seeing Asperger's acros the board here. We need to do further testing. " When we finally got the dx this past Spring/Summer- it was a relief and overwhelming at the same time. It has taken me a long time to adjust.
