Guest guest
The most well-known is University of Nebraska... http://dcs.unl.edu/disted/ you can start there. Many universities offer high school classes, but I know that you can order materials instead of paying tuition if you choose... They are pretty self-directed and have quite a few choices.... their catalog also gives you guidance for a general high school diploma, a college prep, etc. I recall getting information from some colleges in Texas and Oklahoma with high school home study information. Just be sure to look for an accredited school. I'd be glad to explain further -- just ask me what you need to know. in Nebraska Sharon: school programs Sharon, in Oklahoma, We were in the same situation as you when my son, tom, was in grade 8 and in grade 10. The first time, the school refused any accomodations. Tom had to pick up his homework himself, and stay on their books. He was forced to do this from Sept. to Jan, but actually made it about 4 times. Then he was hospitalized, which included a school program, and finally attended school from March to June. The p-doc said: tom is smart enough to pass the year even if he goes for a couple of months. He was right. Grade 10, the second week of school they called and asked that i keep him home until he has more control over himself!! He was offered to study in the resource room, but he refused to be singled out! Anyway... there are public, alternate site programs offered locally. The program is for high school aged kids that dont fit into the standard school system, but are intelligent and independant enough to work on high school credits. Each student is assigned a subject and works on it at their own pace. The teachers each have a class learning the same subject, but at different levels. They monitor the progress of each student and ensure that they are completing their assignments. THe students must attend every day but are allowed 3 days off per year (appoitments, sickness, court, etc.). If they miss more, they must make up the time after school. The program runs in the mornings, with an option for the afternoons. This program has been a life saver for tom. Literally. take care, wendy, in canada ============================ It would have been sooo much better had he been able to complete the year, but it would have taken the school's cooperation. In all, they didn't really care about my son, his mental health, or his education. Guest guest
Also, both my sons took college courses (one started at 11 and the younger one at 10) through community college in a program called community education. They did their work at home and just went in to take their tests at a local center. With homeschooling, you have tons of options. Guest guest
Does anyone know any homeschool curriculum that is used for special needs children or those with AS? Also, are there any private schools in the Austin area that are for children with AS? Thanks in advance! Faith never wonders why. Worry about nothing, pray about everything! 'Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.' "For every minute you are angry, you lose 60 seconds of happiness." Sometimes the best gifts come in the ugliest packages. April is Autism Awareness Month, show ur support!

Hey, Debbie, I'm from the Houston area. You might want to check out the group Autism Treatment. They talk a lot about advocacy issues, but they also know a lot about specific resources in specific cities.
