Does the ADOS test usually accurately depict children with Asperger's? Is this

more appropriate for a certain age range?

for ASD, to see if she will qualify. She has been diagnosed with AS medically.

She is currently homeschooled. When assessed by school district 3 years ago,

they didn't find her eligible (she was receiving services under the Early

Childhood Developmental Delay at that time). They raved about her intelligence

and didn't accept our concerns.

comments from the various testers about her intelligence again, and not seeing

the ASD. Forunately my son's Early Intervention teacher is " on my side " and

sees our dd on the spectrum, and has filled in a GADs form for us, and given

permission for the staff to call her etc.

attention from the staff. I'm not sure whether having more tests done by an

Independent Evaluator would show her Asperger traits. Her problems show up in

real life, and particularly, when family members are present.

I would venture to guess not always b/c of the high functioning part.

My dd is high functioning autism and always ends up right at the

cutoff so not considered autistic (but is considered asd) on the ados

(same thing on the cars)

Perhaps others will chime in with their experiences, however, it is my understanding that the ADOS is an excellent, standard for measuring autism spectrum disorders, however, it does not yield a diagnosis in isolation. Many other tests are taken into consideration and parent questionaires are very important. It is only with a full schedule of various kinds of testing, plus parent interviews, that a diagnosis occurs.

In short, the ADOS might or might not yield an AS diagnosis, but is a very respected tool.

I have a 10 year old dd daughter with HFA. Her neurodevelopmental pediatrician

had an ADOS along with an ADI-R conducted. Now, with this said, I need to offer

you a few points.

First, to answer your question. The ADOS is a patient interview. There are

four different modules for four different levels of communication and fluency.

The following describes the modules. " Module 1 is used with children who do not

consistently use phrase speech, Module 2 with those who use phrase speech but

are not verbally fluent, Module 3 with fluent children, and Module 4 with fluent

adolescents and adults. The one group within the autism spectrum that the ADOS

does not address is nonverbal adolescents and adults. "

Hence, the ADOS already has prescribed levels to attend to all ages levels. The

only people that it can not test are older people who cannot communicate.

Therefore, age is not the issue.

Second, the ADOS should not be the only tool used to diagnose your child. I am

a firm advocate for including the parents input since our observations would be

a key component in the determination. This is why the ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic

Interview, Revised), the parent interview, is a wonderful compliment to the

ADOS.

Third, Cassie is correct in sharing that it is not the standardized test that

will profer the diagnosis on its own. The diagnosis must come from a

neurodevelopmental specialist as it relates to educational services and IDEA.

This specialist, if they are worth anything, will use their own observations and

alternative evaluation tools along with standardized testing to determine the

diagnosis.

Please let us know if you would like for me or the group to offer further

details or if you have any other questions.
