Guest guest
Thoughts on episode 2? I watched last night and the part about the official diagnosis brought back sad memories of that time in our lives when our fears were confirmed. It's ironic that the discussion on the first episode turned to curing Asperger's and that's what Max's dad googled first thing. I guess that's a dad thing to try to fix things. All in all, they are portraying AS pretty accurately and the overwhelming feelings at the time of diagnosis. Wish I had that supportive a family though! > > So what did everyone think of Parenthood last night? For me, my head realizes this is great for awareness (maybe some people in my life will watch and start to get it) but, that being said it was a little bit heartbreaking for me to watch. > > Thoughts? >
Guest guest
I loved it when the Dad asked the Mom, "What do we do now?" and she said "We go to work". That's exactly the answer I gave before she said it. Then seeing the Dad out playing pirate. Guest guest
I'm very much enjoying the asperger plotline -- even if i am annoyed w/my brothers for not having watched the shows yet. I'm interested to see what they plan to do know that they are accepting the dx. > > > > > > So what did everyone think of Parenthood last night? Guest guest
I finally caught the first two episodes so I know what you are all talking about! Amazing how Asperger's manifests itself in different ways. I couldn't relate to the family's reaction to it as a death sentence. When we got the diagnosis, I was so relieved! There was finally a name to all the little quirks, it all made sense, and it was a diagnosable condition that you could treat. Also, I wish the doc had a few lines to elaborate on what it is. If this dx is in here partly for awareness, then say what it is! It's a neurological problem! It affects social skills and coordination/muscle tone! Say something! I'm already sucked in to all the other plot lines, so i'd say this is a good one. Finally, Krause is pretty yummy. Who knew? (And, did he lose weight between the pilot and the 2nd episode?) Guest guest
Hopefully the writers will at least touch on the challenges of affording all the different interventions, the fact that insurance and state agencies don't just swoop in and pay for everything, and the logistical challenges of just fitting it all in to the schedule while trying to give the NT kid some time and attention too. I could see the big sister becoming more rebellious in light of the attention Max gets because of his dx. I think they are taking the story in that direction with the bag of pot she hid in the yard. > > > > > > > > So what did everyone think of Parenthood last night? Guest guest
How do you "go to where he is"? I know how simple it was to dress up and play pirate, but my gson is very closed off to others. Its usually leave me alone, get out of here, or some such comment. He is an avid lego builder but leaves us in the dust when it comes to actually building something, he is very good at having exactly symetrical planes, etc. And he protects what he builds, is really into war and video games. And I am not even sure what his dx is, his mom is not willing to discuss it with me yet. Hugs, Michele----- l8elucretia@... wrote: > I'm so with you, Jen! Guest guest
Laurel, I agree! A dx will definitely bring relief for my family at this point. So many things are making sense now, and if the dx is AS, we will be able to work on solutions instead of wondering "why is she doing that?" Guest guest
Yep, I was also relieved, too relieved, I got doubtful of the dx as I wondered if I ansewred questionare questions wrong b/c I was confused or desperate for answers until the doc reminded we also had questionares from countless teachers too On 3/13/10, Barbara Pinckney <b-pinckney@...> wrote: > > Laurel, I agree! Guest guest
I'm with you 2 as well, when we found out I was SO relieved to have a name for what I was seeing - and super happy to know what direction to go in! Also, we cried for his future of uncertainty but we also know it's in our power to influence and change it drastically from what it would have been with no intervention. It's not a death sentence. I didn't like that portrayal so much cuz that is still the same child. Putting a name to behaviors doesn't invalidate the child. Guest guest
I like it. My favorite line came from Dr. " Pelikan " . " The best predictor of success for children with Asperger Syndrome is parental involvement. " We all do different things but in the end it's the fact that we do things that seems to predict. Perhaps we each do what is required of our own child and it isn't always the same for everyone. I didn't like the way the other asperger family was portrayed so much but it was an exaggeration and I think I understand it. I can remember how overwhelmed I was by all the possible treatments in the beginning. I still feel overwhelmed by people who are trying many treatments at once. We've tended toward mainstream and everything else seems so complicated and doing so many at once can complicate things because there isn't any real way to tell which thing is helping. So from the perspective of Max's parents the more experienced parents seem like they're extremely organized and enthusiastic and overwhelming. Still, it's not a fair representation of all parents with kids who have AS, so it doesn't feel very nice. I love when the dad puts on a pirate costume. I find myself doing a lot of going to where he is. I watch what he watches, I try to play his video games with him and participate in what he likes and engage him in coversation about whatever stimming things he's saying. I think this has done more to encourage social skills than pretty much anything else. > > > > So what did everyone think of Parenthood last night? Guest guest
It was funny when I saw the first episode I was like " are you serious?? " WHERES THE MELTDOWNS!! However when the lil boy jumped on the other kid to beat him up in class, I was like yep thats my daughter!! LOL its nice to see it being given some screen time. When I watched the first episode and the interaction between the Guy and his father, I bawled. That was me and My parents and my husbands mom. No one believed that Caitlin had Aspergers. They just didn't see it. Their reaction was " she isn't autistic " Ok no shes not rain man but she does have Aspergers. I will continue to watch this show, I want to see how they unfold these characters. And see how often I bawl over similarities! :-D I have to say I was in denial for a long time. The first time someone mentioned my daughter might be AS was at a homeschool discussion on special needs in children. I spoke with the woman who has years of experience with HS kids with special needs. I described bean to her and she immediately wrote on a piece of paper 'Aspergers' I was pissed (excuse my language) but I was angry. I thought how dare you tell me my daughter has Aspergers. Shes just bright right?? And a lil stubborn (ok more than stubborn) But once I started researching and trying to figure it all out and taking her to get a diagnosis I accepted it and then I was relieved. Every now and then I'm still in denial and cringe when someone says oh shes autistic. i'm working on that one!! I bought the book " Autism's hidden blessings " today from the book store. Hoping its good! :-D Ok sorry for babbling so much > > > From: Barbara Pinckney <b-pinckney@...> > Subject: RE: ( ) Re: Parenthood, episode 2 > Aspergers Treatment > Date: Saturday, March 13, 2010, 8:29 AM > > > > > Laurel, I agree!
