Guest guest
I'm considering a summer camp that teaches social skills to hfa/asperger's kids. I'm hesitant due to the high cost ($2,500/4 weeks) but I'm stuck on whether my son would be better off going to more therapy with his psychologist ($180/hour with only 20% reimbursement) to work on how to deal with frustration and rigidity. I am torn as I think much of my son's frustration is a result of social issues. I can't do both over the summer and feel really stuck on where the money would be best spent. Guest guest
I would go with camp. I am assuming this camp is specifically for kids like ours. If so then they will address they same things the doc would. I had my son do a 2 weeks last year and it was great! Guest guest
Sorry I'm not answering your question at all - but inquiring about the camp. I had a hard time finding a suitable one, and ended up enrolling our son in a one week social skills camp since nothing else seemed available anywhere. Where is the camp you're considering? How can one find out about these camps? I googled this in every way imaginable, and did not come up with much. My dev. Ped. was unable to recommend alternatives. Guest guest
Do some research on the place and see if you can talk to parents of kids who've attended. If it's a quality place and you can afford it, do it. There's an excellent summer program here in Austin and we've sent my son a few times and it's great! If we had heard about it when he was younger, he would've attended a lot more. Find out what type of curriculum they use and the background/training of the staff who would be working with your son. If it all checks out, go for it. One-on-one therapy has a place, too, but if he already has been getting that kind of help, it might be good to change things up. Plus, with a camp specific to social skills therapy, they can do things like social autopsies and social stories in the moment instead of thoretical, which can be hard for our children to do (especially when they are younger.) Guest guest
I think your son would enjoy the camp more and also get a lot out of it. You can always do more therapy at a later time. Guest guest
I agree - I'd go with the camp. You can't get the social interaction with just the therapist as with a group of peers. We've done them in the past and found them beneficial. > > I would go with camp. I am assuming this camp is specifically for kids like ours. Guest guest
Sue, The best place I've found that can help you locate a camp for children on the spectrum or with socio-emotional issues is the ARC. There are some great day/overnight camps out there, but unfortunately they don't get the exposure. Where are you located? To those in Southern New England the two best I've encountered are Camp Akeela (overnight) and The Spotlight Program (runs year round with an extended summer program....it is run out of the Northeast ARC in Danvers, MA). le ( ) Re: Which therapy is money better spent? Guest guest
Ok, I was going to say camp too but wanted to wait b/c of my lack of experience. I think my dd gets more from group social skills than she does from individual therapy so she will be doing group social skills camp (day camp) this summer On 2/7/11, suzmarkwood@... <suzmarkwood@...> wrote: > I think your son would enjoy the camp more and also get a lot out of it.
