The school district's Wednesday night panel discussion was a good step in the right direction. The discussion attracted 325 people to hear experts and to ask questions of them about the symptoms teachers, staff and students have reported. The widespread symptoms - sometimes referred to as allergylike, but serious enough to require medication and cause some people to stay away from the building - are widely thought to have something to do with substances present in the building, such as mold. People got to hear Wednesday from experts who have studied the situation and are familiar with similar situations elsewhere. Apparently, such problems are not uncommon in public buildings. That the problem is being taken seriously by the authorities seems pretty clear. The state, the county, the feds and the private sector all have been brought in. Physical changes have been made. New tests have been conducted, and some improvement in air quality has been reported. Still, people are worried. In these circumstances, it remains crucial to keep the lines of communication open, to air issues in public, to answer questions in whatever quantity they might arise and to give people access to experts who don't work for the school district.
