Guest guest
My HFA DS (9) has often complained vociferously about me using what he calls " figure of speeches " . He will say " Mommy please don't use them. I don't understand them! " When I explain that I need to use them because they are a part of normal speech in our language and that he needs to learn them he will say " Well at least warn me first " LOL! I tell him that isn't possible but that I will explain what they mean so he can understand. DS does get sarcasm (e.g. " Mommy, you don't mean that- you're just being sarcastic! " ) and he also can understand puns. He cracked right up when I ordered him " chewelry " the other night! But " figure of speeches " have really been elusive for him. Well, I had a wonderful experience with him in the car this morning. We were driving to school and I told him I had gone to his old school yesterday to pick up some papers. I told him I saw his old classroom teacher and principal and that they had asked about him and then I mentioned another teacher I saw. He didn't seem to know who I was talking about so I started to describe her. I gave a physical description and when I finished, I paused and asked if he knew who I meant. His response came loud and clear: " Doesn't ring a bell. " HA! It was so perfect, it almost escaped my attention. He actually had to tell me he had used a figure of speech! Then he told me he had learned it on a cartoon show. So the next time you think your kid is rotting their brain watching cartoons- think again! -Tania
Guest guest
Is that where my kids get their understanding? I'm glad to know that. Now I don't feel quite as guilty about letting them watch modern cartoons, although I still don't like them.We live with my parents, so we use a lot of OLDER phrases. Sometimes Adam gets them, sometimes it's Zane that can't wrap his brain around it.FawnFrom: sopranotania <sopranotania@...> Sent: Wed, February 16, 2011 9:34:43 AMSubject: ( ) Figure of Speech My HFA DS (9) has often complained vociferously about me using what he calls "figure of speeches". Guest guest
You should get him an idiom dictionary or something similar. My ds loved that at that age. My ds is 14 yo (hfa) and he gets these but always seems to get them wrong just a tad bit, just like the character "Ziva " on NCIS always does. Today my ds was playing a shoot-em-up game on the xbox. He started yelling, "Come on! Come on! I need a new pair of shoes!" lol. (i.e. "baby needs a new pair of shoes.")
