Guest guest
, My suggestion won't really get him out and interacting with others, but have you tried model cars? Since he loves model cars, you might be able to get him interested in building them. There are different levels of difficulty as well. Some models are just putting them together, some require glue-ing (I know that's probably spelled wrong), and some require you cut the pieces out, glue together, and then paint. Most local hobby stores, or even walmart and such, should carry models he might be interested in. Places like s should have little nature kits, or scrapbooks for him to use to record facts he learns about his subjects or even if he collects leaves and such on nature walks. Hope this helps some. Guest guest
My son (9th grade, also) loves old, fast cars as well and hiking/camping has always been a fun time for all of us. Maybe look into area car shows? (Could you maybe purchase an ole car as a fixer-upper?). Hiking? Trails and State Parks are a great place!!! Even in the winter (we're in WI), there are trails that are partially cleared to just walk on. Maps.....hmmmm.....maybe HE can plan a day trip or weekend hiking trip by finding a spot on a map? Hope this helps. Good luck!!! Robin And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree, there will be an answer, let it be. For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see, there will be an answer. let it be. Guest guest
Has he been involved in Scouts? There are also Explorer clubs I have heard of that would involve science and nature. Could he do some volunteer work - to an environmental cause? There are several groups like Clean Water Action in our area that do river clean ups and other activities. Those are my ideas - hope it helps.SuzanneSent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry®From: "dweeny123@..." <dweeny123@...>Sender: Date: Wed, 29 Sep 2010 16:42:58 -0000< >Reply Subject: ( ) Need help finding hobbies for 9th grader This is a tough one, I'm looking for ideas on finding hobbies for a bright, creative 9th grader who loves vintage cars, nature, science and maps. Guest guest
Are there any clubs at his school? At my son's school they have over 50 clubs - most started by students with certain interests. Unfortunately my son doesn't participate in one. What we have done is join the local science museum and the local audobon/nature societies. They have many activities and classes geared towards families or kids. Even just a visit to one gets my son interacting with others more than he would if he just sat at home. We also encourage my son's interest in science by giving him subscriptions to magazines like Discovery, Scientific American & National Geographic. Guest guest
I know what you mean. After school we have our daughter earn computer time by sticking to her routine. On Friday night after school we go roller skating, to the mall or bowling then home for movie night as a family. On Saturday's and Sunday's we get out from 10-3pm to do a typical teen activity as a family. Then she earns her computer time. There still is too much computer time. But this is our routine. In the summer she goes to extended year and has one month off. In August we get out daily, bike riding, beach musuems. I haven't been able to work though this takes a lot of time. Guest guest
For vintage cars, there is model making? The Evil Genius books have some interesting science projects (but avoid the PC ones if you are trying to reduce computer time.) We enrolled my son in 4H because there are some science projects and he is very interested in electronics/electricity and chickens now. Kathy J. Guest guest
Have you heard of Geocaching? Or Letterboxing? You can read about letterboxing here -- it involves looking online to find hidden boxes in your area, then using maps and exploring to find them. A friend does this with her kids and they love it, and I always want to try it with my daughter. I think geocaching is a bit more sophisticated, using GPS coordinates to find stuff... but the idea is the same. Diane > > Has he been involved in Scouts?
