Hi, I'm new to the group and I have a 5 1/2yr ds recently diagnosed with

HFA. I am still learning my way around the processes and procedures of

the school system and have a few questions. Last year after many

evaluations my son transfered to our public school because his private

school was " unable to care for him " . He received an IEP with minor

behavior mods, and then at the end of the school year his IEP was

discontinued because he was entering kindergarten and was no longer

under the " early intervention " umbrella. What state are you in? You need to look up your state regulations on this. I'm not sure if this is legal. Also, I would put everything--absolutely everything in writing to the school. I would write a letter (after you read the regs) asking for prior written notice (PWN) on this change. They are required to do this. The school said that he didn't

qualify this year because didn't have an academic need for it. DS is

reading and writing on an almost 2nd grade level. He is suppose to have

a 504 plan this year and no one has connected me yet to go over his

plan. Even after I sent a letter to the principal requesting a meeting

to discuss it and spoke with her in person about having a meeting at ds

kindergarten orientation. To make matters worse the kindergarten

program is only a 1/2day program this year. When did you send the letter and what was your message? Was it a formal IEP meeting request?

I am very concerned about the upcoming year and am not sure what I

should ask for to be included in the 504. Don't discuss anything about a 504 as you have not agreed to this action.  Ds needs constant reminders

of the rules and needs instructions repeated to him several times. He

also may have ADHD, but that hasn't been addressed yet with his

specialist. Also, does anyone know if I can request for him to receive

harder work for the areas he's ahead? My fear is that he'll become bored

and start acting out.

Any advice would be greatly apprecited!
