Guest guest
We've got a really good dentist who does the entire appointment herself so that hasn't been a problem, but he desprately needs braces and I am really not looking forward to it at all. I think we are going to try and get the invisiline because I think it will be better for him than dealing with the wires and stuff. --- Original Message --- From: " " <moien@...> Sent:Thu 2/18/10 12:38 am Subj:( ) Dentist Appt. Guest guest
Oh, good idea about invisiline. I will see if our ortho does that or if I'll have to travel 70 miles one way to get them. When my daughter got her braces on, there was a boy there that I could tell had some kind of sensory issues, and I think possibly autistic, and the girls were very good about talking him through it and his mom was right there doing the same. I dread the day... > > We've got a really good dentist who does the entire appointment herself so that hasn't been a problem, but he desprately needs braces and I am really not looking forward to it at all. Guest guest
Hi Julile, Does your dentist know about his issues and sensitivities and fear? We let ours know and I was surprised with the care they took. They take him first and let him bring his DS along. Even headphones, if he wants. They say they go quicker,,,,but who knows? Anyway,,,,hopefully you can talk to the actual hygienist and dentist and let them know what you need from them. It really is simple. Just treat others kindly and with respect. Guest guest
>You might find the Invisalign more expensive, and time consuming. I have heard that they need to be replaced frequently (that's how they work). That would mean MORE visits to the orthodontist. I had the same dread last summer, as my ds had to get braces. He had seen his sister go thru the whole process and she delighted in telling him how much it hurt after an adjustment. I tried to prepare him for it, explained as much as possible to him. One thing that I did get for him was a " squishy " toy dinosaur, that he could hold to get him through the discomfort. He did give it a good sqeeze a few times throughout the first fitting. I think that I was more concerned about it than he was. Anyway, we survived. He is great about brushing, after several warnings from the orthodontist. He finds it a bit uncomfortable, but tolerable. I think the greatest encouragement, for both of us, is to see how much straighter his teeth are, after just a few months. It makes it all worthwhile. Good luck. Guest guest
Our last dentist visit was a nightmare, my son has has lower 6s fissure sealed now his upper 6s need done, had the lowers done without too much of a fuss, but this visit wouldn't get in the chair tried sitting him on my knee, wouldn't open his mouth tried all sorts of bribes, toys, games, ball pits. No joy, after a frustrating 30 mins left. To make matters worse the dentist is a friend, I was her nurse for 4 years and Gregor has been visiting the surgery since he was a baby. No explanation for his change or how to get him back to not being bothered about the dentist, heaven help us if he actually needs any treatment! Guest guest
Wow, I wonder what bothered him that much? You might consider writing a social story about visiting the dentist. Maybe he will suddenly say what happened as you go over what happens during a visit a few times? We have never had a big dentist problem at my end but I can imagine it would be difficult to manage since it is necessary and opening one's mouth is kind of part of the deal. lol. The one thing our dentist does that I like is that he tells the kids what he is going to do before he does it. I think it helps my boys since they have a lot of anxiety. PS: Has he read the Gregor books yet? Roxanna "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." E. Burke Re: ( ) Dentist Appt. Guest guest
Don't mean to jump in,,,,but you brought up the "Gregor" books. The last time you did, we went and rented them from the library. Read them and he loved them so much, he got them for Christmas. The lady at the bookstore then recommended the "Percy " series. Got them very early January and he almost had a heart attack when they came out with the movie. Now he's doing the "PenDragon" series. So,,,,for any of you out there who have a kid who liked "Gregor" books, these other ones are a hit with us, too. It really is simple. Just treat others kindly and with respect. Guest guest
We have gradually worked up to a full dental cleaning and sealants. My girlfriend is our hygienist and she is wonderful with my son. She explains everything she is doing and has a good sense of humor. My son did have an evaluation for braces (which he does need) and invisiline is not an option for him. I am still mulling over whether to do it or not. He doesn't have crooked teeth, but he has a narrow pallate. Not sure what to do. Pam In a message dated 2/19/2010 11:12:59 A.M. Guest guest
Roxanna, We did start the Gregor books, I don't know if he is a tad on the young side for them, he likes them, but by the time we on to reading the second page of the night he is fast asleep! Terry Pratchett seems to hold his imagination longer, I will try him with them again once he is a little older ( cause now I want to know what happens). Pam, if your son needs braces it is best to get them done as it will prevent dental treatment when he is older, braces not only improve aesthetics but remove overlaps etc where it can be hard/ impossible to keep clean, and so help prevent possible future fillings etc that will just need redone over and over again. I would really consider getting it done now even though it may be a struggle. Lor B From: doodlebugboodles <doodlebugboodles>Subject: Re: ( ) Dentist Appt. Guest guest
Thanks for the info Robin. I will have to check into these books. I saw that Percy movie was out but we did not see it. We'll probably get the DVD/rent it. I'm glad your ds like the Gregor books. I do! Same author has written a slightly older set of books that are even more fabulous - The Hunger Games and Catching Fire. The third in this series is coming out later this year. Oh, these are really cool books! Roxanna "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." E. Burke Re: ( ) Dentist Appt.
