Guest guest
We also had a very similar experience with our 20 yo son. We took him off Abilify and put him on Intuniv – had to slowly come off the Abilify and slowly go up on the Intuniv. He was a mess for a week or so (depressed, agitated, angry, etc.) after he was totally switched. Unfortunately, he was out of state at his grandmother’s and we had to bring him back home. The doctor decreased his Intuniv and he has evened out. On a more positive note, he has lost 30 pounds in the last two months. I knew the Abilify was part of his weight problem but I did not realize how much of an impact the Abilify was having. He will have blood work done next month and we are hoping he will no longer need Glucophage and Crestor. It should take 3-4 weeks to reach an effective dose, so I will let you know how it works out. I know it is hard for people who meet her to believe, but she is actually a sweet girl in so many ways. This year, has been a nightmare, however, and today is an example. She had a doctor's appointment where I was asking for Intuniv. My doctor is a wonderful GP, but tends to be long winded and is an Aspie himself. I am sure. He was trying to convince me that several of the stimulants, which she has already tried, might be the way to go. About that time she got impatient and said, " I'm leaving! " and she did. He then suggested that Intuniv for OD is probably a good choice.. Guest guest
, did you mean the doctor increased his Intuniv or did he really decrease it? I am trying to be very careful and not get her on something that is not good for her. We had the same experience with Abilify. I thought it was a miracle drug and for about a year she was wonderful. but she did gain weight, then the Abilify didn't seem to work anymore and the doctors increased it.. She put on a bunch of weight and she was already chubby. There was no improvement in her behavior either, so I insisted on DC ing the Abilify and the doctors were not happy about it. Now I asked for Intuniv and reluctantly they gave it to her. This is day 2 and she was very grouchy, so far on 1 mg. I am just leaving her alone and hoping she improves with time.. She has also lost 30 pounds in about 4 months. She was also diagnosed with borderline diabetes while on the Abilify, and I wonder if that was the reason. It is so scary to try to help your kid and not know if you are helping or hurting. Especially when they accuse you of being the reason they are having problems.. Guest guest
, We had the exact same problem with Abilify - weight gain - 15 lbs. in 8 months on our 8 year old. She's lost about 10lbs. now being off the abilify for about 3 months. It would have been a greater amount, but she broke her leg in May - the same time we stopped the Abilify - and wasn't very mobile for about 8 weeks. Now that she's up and moving well, it's falling off her! Talk about stress - let me say that I hope none of you experience a leg break with your Aspie...OMG! Glad it's over - I think God was testing me to see if I could find the patience to handle her! Guest guest
Bless you, Lori. I bet that was trying. We haven’t experienced a broken bone. Tyler did have his wisdom teeth removed around Christmas and did remarkably well. Tyler was a stick person when he was younger, and prior to the Abilify, so I think the weight gain was directly related to the Abilify. He looks so good now but still needs to lose more weight. Guest guest
I honestly thought there were times that we weren't going to make it through to the end. What I did notice that was interesting was her amplified reaction to pain. I know that every person (AS or not) has a different pain tolerance, but her reaction on the day of the break, and then the couple days with the temporary cast was shocking. I felt so bad for her. Once we had the real cast on, then we had to convince her that she could move with her walker (she couldn't get the hang of crutches at all), and not be in pain. It was definitely another learning experience with her. I've never had a broken bone, so I couldn't even prepare her with what to expect, which would have helped some. Honestly, she was detoxing from Geodon (being weened off) when this happened - and I wonder often if her decision to try to rollerskate on a neighbor's skates when she has never been able to skate before - was directly related, or if it was just "kid" reasoning. I'll never know...but the coincidence of the timing makes me wonder. Guest guest
I've been wondering for about the last 4 weeks why the heck camp was so much harder for my son this year. Could it be the intuniv?! I have a call in to the neurologist to find out. We're also talking about having a neuropsych evaluation done. Apparently, it is very detailed and can tease out strengths and weaknesses very well so that the school can get a better idea of how to help him. Meanwhile, I hope the intuniv isn't the problem because it helps a lot with attention. Miriam > > We also had a very similar experience with our 20 yo son. Guest guest
How long has he been on the Intuniv? If he was on it during the school year was he doing o.k.? From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of mimasdprofile Sent: Saturday, July 31, 2010 9:00 AM Subject: Re: ( ) Newbie - Intuniv comments I've been wondering for about the last 4 weeks why the heck camp was so much harder for my son this year. Could it be the intuniv?! I have a call in to the neurologist to find out. We're also talking about having a neuropsych evaluation done. Apparently, it is very detailed and can tease out strengths and weaknesses very well so that the school can get a better idea of how to help him. Guest guest
Oh please don't find out that it is the Intuniv! My hopes and prayers for this year are hanging on Intuniv working for my dd. I think camps get harder as they get older. When they are near or in the teen years, camps are not so positive, both because of our kids tolerance to it and also because the kids at camp are also adolescent and thus difficult.. For us, camp is about over, I think. Guest guest
was doing well as far as I could tell during the school year but he was also in a very protective environment. The environment at camp is very different from school. This year it was also ridiculously HOT during the whole 4 weeks. I thought maybe his medication might affect his ability to tolerate the heat. Of course has changed a lot too. He's about 8 inches taller than last year and his voice is getting deeper and he's squeaking a bit and he has a little facial hair and he's greasy and he's 13. He's a big kid now. > > > > We also had a very similar experience with our 20 yo son. Guest guest
That's what I was wondering also. I only noticed the increased agitation at the beginning when starting Intuniv...the lower doses, and probably the first couple of weeks. After that, my daughter stabilized, and seems much better now.
