Guest guest
At our last med eval our Doc also suggested fish oil, since my son receives Medicaid, the Dr. said he would write a script and Medicaid should cover the cost and they did. My son has been on the fish oil since 4/7, I figured it would take about a month before I start seeing any change. Just an FYI, the doc wrote the script for Lovaza 1 GM capsule, for anyone else who uses Medicaid. Dawn
Guest guest
I tried other things early on. I can't believe I spent over $500 on a listening system from our occupational therapist that was suppose to help my daughter with attention and focus using multiple audio inputs. Then there was the $300 evaluation and then $200 glasses from a developmental optometrist. This was suppose to help her with her visual overload issues. She was so young and needed help and I trusted the occupational therapist that directed me. There are so many alternative health programs for autistic kids. Our neuroppsch wanted our daughter in her biofeedback program. There are also some kind of hyper air chambers that are suppose to put more oxygen to the brain. So I suppose if you spend some money on fish oil what is the harm, the cost is not too high. And there are no risks I know of. My grandmother would give my mohter cod liver oil to make her healthier I guess this was in the 1930's and 40's. At the NJ ASPEN Asperger Conference one of the psychiatrist was asked about this and she said there are no clinical trials to prove this helps but she said if it works for some people that is great. So far ABA (behavior therapy is evidence based), medication for anxiety and depression is evidence based and social skills is a best current practice. There are those teaching static skills (social stories, scripts) and then there are dynamic social skills. I have my hopes in these three areas. Guest guest
My son (5) has been on Cod Liver Oil for 1 year now. Unfortunately, we have never been successful at introducing one intervention at a time, so I've never been confident that the CLO is really responsible for his improvement. However, overall, he has become a much more focused, pleasant, understanding, capable boy on the CLO, behavior modification, Occupational Therapy, Tae Kwon Do, etc. Soooo, we try to keep everything status quo, which includes CLO daily! -
Guest guest
Fish oil is an essential fatty acid, so named because it's, well, essential to proper brain functioning. Once upon a time, our diet gave us this essential nutrient. For most of us, it no longer does. The truth is, we should all be taking fish oil unless we have a diet rich in naturally occurring omega fatty acids. I mean, could you imagine telling someone it's okay to eat a diet that has no Vitamin B? Or no protein? And yet... Dog food has had fish oil in its ingredients list for longer than most of us have known about fish oil because it makes their coats glossy. Now... how can we get the companies to lower their prices so we can be as healthy as our dogs??-- Dena Page, M.Ed., CBACertified Auditory Integration Therapy (DAA) Practitioner 054 812 5973www.listenbetterwithait.comCertified Irlen ScreenerCertified Behavior Analyst
Guest guest
Patti, I would never run out again. I did not notice a difference when he started, since he started Tenex at about the same time. But once I ran out and thought Oh Well, I'll grab them next week at the health food store. He was a bit different that week. My neighbor noticed it too and asked why he was so edgy. Once back with the fish oil, he was lees moody and aggitated. I think they are a wonderful option and I wish they would clean cars Bobbie in NJK > > Hi All: > > We've all heard about the fabulous benefits of fish oil - it does everything from helping brain and joint function to doing your taxes and washing your car. Guest guest
It's sad how much money is made taking advantage of parents who want to help their child with autism. It's an industry. I was an ABA tutor for a little guy with more severe autism and his mom still wanted to try everything. She did everything from fish oil, listening programs, diets, sensory this and that. ABA was the only thing that advanced his skills. Someone in my area is doing a hyperbaric chamber. Now that is one thing my friend never tried. lol. But you know, one parent says, " Yes, it helped him be 'calmer' " or something similar and people rush out to buy the same thing. Roxanna Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again. Guest guest
I'll never go on vacation again without the flax seed oil (our choice of omega's). That's a nightmare. We can't make it through an entire church service unless the kids have had it at least 5 out of 7 days that week and specifically that morning. I swear by it. > > > > Hi All: > > > > We've all heard about the fabulous benefits of fish oil - it does everything from helping brain and joint function to doing your taxes and washing your car.
