Guest guest
Thanks Kay. I'm curious - would you say your son's defiance and oppositional behavior is mild, moderate or severe? And did it come and go in waves before meds? Or was it always consistent? My son has been diagnosed with Aspergers but over the past 3 years 2 pediatricians and a psychiatrist said they see ADHD behavior. None of them seem to care to put a label on it and give an official diagnosis.... they just talk about treating the symptoms. ?? (We've had a really hard time with finding a good Dr.) We also read in the Rady's Children's Hospital - Parent's Guide to Autism Spectrum Disorders - that with an Aspergers diagnosis, a seperate diagnosis for ADHD is not given. It is automatically grouped in with the Aspergers diagnosis.... ??? sigh.... we're very confused parents over here! Just trying to help our son the best we can and so far we've been doing it with very little help from any professionals. Thanks for your help and advice! Val ( ) re: what is the main symptom you are trying to contro? Has your son been diagnosed with ADHD? Picking up all the energy from a group of kids and poking and touching and annoying other kids sounds like ADHD. Our son is like that and we have found that Concerta works really well for him. It calms him down and helps him with self-control. He is also very defiant and oppositional and after many trials of drugs we finally found one that has produced some improvement in this aspect – Abilify. The types of drugs that help with defiance and/or irritability are anti-psychotics and mood stabilizers. Ability is an anti-psychotic. Other drugs that may help with defiance and irritability are Lamictal, which is a mood stabilizer and Namenda, which was originally prescribed for Alzheimer’s. However, you should only start with one drug at a time; otherwise you don’t know which is causing what.
