Hi Rita and Dee,

I'm another new member with a prominent herniated cervical disk (C6–7)

that is pressing on my spinal cord. The pain and discomfort are

manageable—not great, but I still work and get around. My spine

specialist is surprised it doesn't hurt a lot more, but after months

of physical therapy my progress is stalled and he thinks I should

consider fusion surgery. Is that something your doctors have brought

up? I'm reluctant to go that route because I hear it increases the

likelihood of problems in adjacent disks, and I don't want to face

more surgery down the road.

Rita,

That's so great that it helped you. Are you in a progressive medical area?

here in New Orleans, we're just lucky we still have any medical care! My

doctor did basically nothing for me. The physical therapy was stopped, because

too much pain and nausea and dizziness with the exercises. I've been rationing

my valium for the spasms and take neurontin when it gets real bad.

Then my worker's comp ran out, so I can't afford a new dr. The charity system

here is not back to full capacity yet since the hurricane.

That's so good that the epidural was good for you, although you hate to keep

having the same thing over and over!

Talk to you later, Dee

I'd like to know if so, how was it?

Dee,

I'm really sorry for what you're going through.I know all about worker comp.My

hubby was on it ,he had a back fusion and then 2 years later I get hurt. It's a

long story but I'm happy because know that I have to pay I'm finally getting the

right treatments.MY frst 3 times of PT I was still working so PT was pointless

,I worked in a bakery so the whole 8 hr shift I was constantly using my arms

which causes me pain.I'd got to PT feel a little better go to work after PT and

within 10 min be in unbearable pain.

I get another injection on the 18th I hope it helps.

Hi Steve,

My pain manegent doc sent me to a neuro surgeon ,because I'm concered with

getting injections for the rest of my life. The surgeon told me that the surgery

would be 50% successeful NICE eh?He also told me that eventually the discs above

and below the fusion would get bad and I'd have to have more surgeries. So I

really don't think I want it.MY husband had a back fusion ,he says the only pain

that went away was the shooting pain in his leg.You are lucky you can still

work.

Hi Steve. My complete history is under the files

section of our group home site. but the

cliff notes are 4 surgeries, 3 with fusions. I

have 4 levels in my Lumbar Fused, and 2 in my

neck. The Back was somewhat successful, the

Cervical was a failure, much more pain after than

before. My Last (2) surgeries were in the year

2000. I was self employed and loved my business,

but had to give it up. I couldn't work through

the pain anymore. After several years I was just

awarded disability insurance under Social

Security. We are Blessed that my Wife who worked

with me, found a career she likes and makes

enough money that we can now pay off 7 years of

medical debt. I guess from my perspective get

2-3 opinions before surgery, and surgery as a

last resort. I do know for the Lumbar when they

fuse, the other good disks take a beating and it

generally works its way up the line. FYI, This

is my experience your mileage may vary. Dave

-Hi Rita welcome to the group. Sorry to hear you have neck problems.

I

had my neck fused about 4 yrs ago at C5-C6. I had several problems in

my neck with bulging discs and bone spurs and the worst was pressure

on

my spinalcord probably similar to what you have. The surgery was no

picnic in itself but I have gotten alot of relief from the pain in

the

last 4 yrs. I am surprised your dr told you cause most it seems don't

that surgery is a 50/50 chance it will help. And yes I have read all

the articles that say a fusion weakens the levels above and below it

too. A year ago I had a double layer fusion in my lower back too. But

then my whole entire lower back is a mess so I won't be surprised if

it

gets worse later on. I just wanted the sciatic nerve pain to

STOP!!!!!!!!!! after 6 yrs of it I had had ENOUGH so I was willing to

have the fusion. Anyway welcome to the group and if you need any info

on surgery or neck troubles feel free to ask. I've been thru most of

it, shots too. Which did NO GOOD at all for me. I am surprised though

that if your 2nd one didn't help they m ..n't want to do the 3rd

usually they

don't. Usually most dr's will di 2 but if those don't help

they don't go to 3 cause its a waste of time. But every dr is

different. Still very different from what the normal seems to be. But

welcome to the group I hope you will find help here for your neck.

Best wishes Sharon Group Owner

Hi Sharon Thank you.The MRI shows buldging at C4-C5 that has mass effect on the

spinal cord.To tell you the truth I'm willing to have the surgery ,i can't stand

the pain ,I hate the fact that I can hardly do anything without pain.My pain

manegement doc told me that they usually do not do surgery untill they've tried

series of injections.Wed I'm having the 3rd done ,I will talk to him about

everything.

I'm happy to read you were able to get some relief.

Hi Rita welcome to the group.. Really DDD attacks people differently some can

handle the pain and have nothing done. Others it causes major problems so they

do the surgery.. I have had 3 disc fused.. but unfortunely for me mine are

failing.. So I still have problems but nothing like I had before the surgery so

it did help..

Steve, after they have exhausted all other things they usually suggest surgery.

Espeacially if the disc is pressing against your spinal cord. Because it could

do premanent damage if not fixed and cause alot more problems.
