Hi everyone. I was just wondering if any of your Aspie kids have hygiene issues. It is so strange to me that my 15 year old dd is SO extremely sensitive to smells but has no clue that she has bad breath all the time because she doesn't brush her teeth properly. She also regularly forgets to put on deoderant which after sweating in a hot gym class, well you get my drift but she doesn't have a clue about her own smells. Do any of you adult Aspies out there believe this is something you finally outgrow or learn that it is just something you have to do to not get funny looks from people or have them talk about you. Or is it just my daughter? Just wondering.

Thanks,

My daughter is almost 10 and we've had hygiene issues for a while now. Main issues seem to be making sure she bathes regularly (if I didn't say anything, she probably wouldn't bathe for more than a week!), daily reminders to brush her teeth, and cleaning up after herself when she goes to the bathroom. That last one seems to be the major issue. No matter what I do or say, I can't seem to get her to wipe properly after a bm so I'm constantly scrubbing her underwear before they go in the wash (ewww!)

I am also hoping she outgrows this stuff....otherwise...I'm worried about when she starts her period! On Thu, Sep 2, 2010 at 6:48 AM, Moorhead <lmoorhead4@...> wrote:

My aspie ds definitely has hygene issues. I make him shower daily, but he "forgets" to put on deod too. He is 14. He also "forgets" to wash his face good and has acne type bumps. It drives me crazy. I don't know whether to ignore or throw a fit...Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry®From: Moorhead <lmoorhead4@...>Sender: Date: Thu, 2 Sep 2010 06:48:19 -0700 (PDT)< >Reply Subject: ( ) Hygiene Hi everyone. Welcome to the club! I have no idea why, wish I did and my DS is 26! Monday he

had a job interview. Went into bathroom, ran water in shower for at least 10

minutes and then immediately shut it off and came out with not a drop on him. No

shower! We have tried money, punishment, todo lists and none of it works!

Good luck.

- can't wait to hear answers to this question. I have a 15 yo son who is the same way. I can't ask did you shower I have to be very specific and even do sniff test about the use of soap and shampoo. Hope he eventually learns the importance of this. I had a psychologist who said years ago that other kids will point it out and he will change. Still waiting!! Why not go for a day during the weekend or something without showering so your daughter can see how you smell after not showering?

You know I think its just an Aspie trait. My ds who is 17 he constantly forgets. During the school year his father & I remind him in the morning to look @ his "checklist" which we have posted on the refrigerator and consists of a A.M. & P.M. reminder card. The A.M. card consists of his hygiene, (incl: brushing teeth, deordorant, brushing hair), taking meds, making sure he has his book bag, keys for the house, lunch money, homework, etc. The P.M. reminder card consists of having his bookbag ready for the next morning, setting out his clothes he is going to wear, taking his nighttime meds, brushing his teeth.. I usually don't have a problem with him showering, its a problem with him remembering to do all these other things.

Me too. I find myself putting deodorant on her myself only to find out she doesn't like the way it smells, but she liked it when I bought it. Or she hasn't brushed her hair. .she doesn't mind wearing dirty clothes and find myself letting her wear the dirty clothes out the door because if I push the issue I know she'll meltdown and both of our mornings are just shot!

I am new to the group, but glad to see I am not alone (not that I thought I

was). My son is almost 15 and hygiene is such an issue with us. There have

been times I've made him go back in the shower several times before he " passes

armpit inspection " .

However, just wondering if any of you have noticed that your child has BO again

in a very short time................I mean sometimes like a half hour.

As far as teeth brushing, my son already had periodontal disease at about age 10

becuase of his horrible brushing. I bought him a water pick and that has helped

somewhat, although he still doesn't quite get how to use it.

Deodorant goes on right after shower and I got a sonicare tooth brush for my daughter. At first she refused to use it because the vibration was too much. We put it away for awhile then got it back out and tried it again and now she can use it without any issues.

Yup! My DD does the same thing. Goes to the bathroom, runs water, wets her toothbrush and cleans nothing. The dentist nags me because she is developing gum disease and she tells him I won't buy her floss etc which is a flat lie. Same with the showers. Once a week if we are lucky, she showers.. It is disgusting, I think, but I also believe it is her rebellion against me so I am not obsessing over it as much..From: Michele

  • 3 weeks later...

we have the same problem with jason he 14 if we dont tell him to wont wash himself hygiene a bad problem. when they reach teenage yrs they get body odor and be on him about brushing his teeth or changing his clothes on the weekends hope at some point it gets \better

From: Roxanna <MadIdeas@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Re: Hygiene Date: Tuesday, September 14, 2010, 2:25 PM

Here, I just refuse to go until he's clean to an acceptable standard. It can cause problems if you have to be somewhere. But we started it sooner rather than later and it only took once or twice before he got the hint that I meant business. If we wanted to go eat dinner, we'd all sit here waiting until my ds was clean enough to pass inspection. he really doesn't notice his own smells and he usually wants to please/not cause a problem. So he cooperates but we still have the problem where he comes down without his hair even wet or comes down after only two minutes in the bathroom. So we send him back. I will tell him in advance now, "We are going to the bowling alley tomorrow but only after you have showered and washed everything, hair too." That way he knows it's coming as well.now I have put it on his daily schedule for school. But that has mixed results. Usually it just

reminds me to remind him. lol. Ironically, this has never been a problem for our older ds (hfa). He was always so hyper sensitive to smell growing up and he always loved being in the tub, then the shower. He cleans every day without being reminded. I didn't know how hard it could be until my younger ds came along and didn't do the same thing.
