We finally got my DIL on last night. Since they work during the day we may not see a whole lot of them. I am so grateful they are here. It sure helps me to know that if they have questions they have a place to ask them now. Fluffy. Re: [ ] Hello Welcome Fluffy's DIL. I think I sort of answered that on my last post. I wasn't alone. I managed it ok, with a little depression and mostly a lack of energy. I never felt suicidal, just kind of listless. I think depression would be the biggest challenge living alone. Nobody to notice if you are getting severely depressed, I would make sure to have some contact when and if you do start feeling that its all a bit too much. -dz-

There wasn't too much physical pain for me. Body aches, such as you might have with the flu. The treatment sapped my energy pretty good. Just take it as easy as possible and drink, drink, drink that water. -dz-

Weeda,

You must be careful with the timing of taking calcium and thyroid medicine as

calcium prevents absorption of thyroid medicine. Here's a link to an article

on Thyroid.About.com: <A

HREF= " http://thyroid.about.com/library/weekly/aa092101a.htm?terms=Calcium " >

http://thyroid.about.com/library/weekly/aa092101a.htm?terms=Calcium</A>

You may be able to help yourself immensely by just reading all the

information about this aspect of HypoT and making the correct timing changes!

My blood tests have >

> been low each time, I get mad because nothing seems to be working.

Do you mean your TSH test is coming back very low (like under 1) yet you're

still experiencing hypo symptoms? Or is your TSH test coming back very high?

I must say that when I eat foods with flour in them I get the same reaction.

And white, refined flour that's in pizza dough is absolutely the worst for

me! Personally, I don't like pizza for that reason but if you really dig it,

you might try making your own with a whole grain pita bread and adding lots

of veggies and less cheese.

I do so much better the less flour I eat; you might, too. I finally found a

bread I could make sandwiches from that has no flour. I learned about it here

on this list! :) It is make from sprouted grain and you can usually find it

in health food markets like Whole Foods, though I've noticed a few mainline

grocery supermarkets are carrying it. One brand name is Ezekial Bread though

there are local brands that can be just as good. Be careful to read labels

as the " complete protein bread " Ezekial makes has millet in it which is

anti-thyroid. And so is soy. So, I look for sprouted grain breads made with

barely, wheat (a last resort), or rye. (I think there is so much wheat

everywhere and in everythaing these days that's why I only buy sprouted wheat

if there's nothing else available.) If you were to try eliminating flour

from your diet for a week or two, you might notice a difference in your

thinking!

Good luck!

Sounds the same as me. You might have coeliac disease:

http://www.celiac.com/

Coeliac disease is known to cause hypothyroidism and diabetes.

These guys can perform tests on you:

I'm now on this diet:

Weeda,

Once your condition is correctly treated and your thyroid function has

been normalized it will not matter much what you eat. Meanwhile,

however, take a look at www.drdebe.com/BARRIERS.htm towards the bottom

of the page. Dr. Debe states, " Many foods have a negative effect on

thyroid hormone synthesis, secretion, conversion, and elimination.

These include: cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, turnips, mustard

greens, peanuts, walnuts, almonds, sorghum, cassava, bamboo shoots,

maize, mustard greens, onions, grapefruit, apples, millet, pinenuts,

kale, and cauliflower. Individuals with an under active thyroid should

reduce or eliminate these foods from their diet until thyroid function

is normalized. "

Best wishes for great health,

Celeste

Hi..In regards to foods best not consumed...listed in books for the condition we

have is raw cabbage, califlower, kale, white flour (pizza crust), white sugar,

peanuts, soy products, and there are more that you can find in " Living Well With

Hypothyroidism " . I was diagnoised with this thyroid problem years ago and was

treated with Armour and never told about foods that are determental for us. I

thought I was cured since the dr. decided that my 97 degree temp. even after

treatment, was evidently normal for me. The very low blood pressure still

remains. I have been eating fresh cabbage and califlower almost daily for years

plus peanuts and was shocked to discover in the last week that I had been

unknowingly messing up my health. After reading the symptoms on the internet, I

had a huge light bulb moment in regards to the why of my weight gain,

depression, foggy thinking, dry skin, etc. I saw on this web site about over the

counter thyroid help and bought some, quite eating the foods daily that were not

good for me and began to make me a power drink in the morning that works

wonders. 1 c. thawed orange juice (not canned), 1 or 2 bananas, 1-2T flax

seeds, 1-2 t. dried kelp powder, and 1/2 c. fresh alfalfa sprouts. Put all in

blender and blend thouroly and drink. I take my over the counter thyroid helper

first thing in the morning becuse , then it will absorb better with no compition

with anything else. I know that each body works differently but perhaps this

info. will help others.

Right now I'm taking thyro complex. I take one early in the morning..1 or 2

hours before I eat or take any other supplements. It has small doses of

thyroid, pituitery, adrenal, spleen, thymus and hypothalamus. I've only taken

it for 4 or 5 days so I don't know if it's working yet. I feel pretty good most

of the time.

It's hard to tell exactly what bothers you or causes you pain until you

remove the gluten and casein from your diet. You might find that potatoes

and eggs do not bother you once you remove grains and dairy. These

substances damage your digestive system and allow all sorts of undigested

proteins to enter the blood stream. I found a lot of my allergies and

other food intolerances went away once I started the paleo diet. Prior to

finding out my coeliac status I used to end up in hospital at least twice

per year from an anaphylaxis attack. It hasn't happened once since then.

Before changing your diet, I recommend that you get tested, as your tests

will come up negative if you are not eating gluten and dairy on a regular

basis.

" Recent research in our laboratory indicates that immune sensitivity to

gluten is exceedingly common, present in 30-40% of all Americans. " -

http://www.enterolab.com

" A diet high in legumes, carbohydrates, and grains could be making you ill.

Why would a diet high in post-agricultural-era foods be detrimental to our

health? Because these foods are foreign to our bodies. Our genes have not

had the time nor the evolutionary pressures to adapt to these new foods " -

http://www.healingcrow.com/dietsmain/paleo/paleo.html

" For the percentage of people with autoimmune hypothyroidism who have

celiac disease, diagnosis and a gluten-free diet may represent a permanent

cure for their hypothyroidism. " - http://www.ithyroid.com/celiac_disease1.htm

Katrina.

Unless a person has leaky gut syndrome (which is not very common),

there is no way for undigested anything to enter the bloodstream.

Absorption of anything one ingests occurs on a cellular and molecular

level. Things which are undigested simply become part of the feces

because there's no way for them to be absorbed. If you are eating a

lot of things that you can't digest then you get diarrhea.

Whenever in doubt, see a doctor and get her/him to help you find out

what's really going on.

your experience? Cost/ Time involved? I see reference
