Guest guest
Tony, My sincerely sympathies to you and to the families of all the dear friends that you have lost just recently. Your strength is inspiring and your compassion just wonderful. God has an incredible plan for you my friend and you're fulfilling it to your and His credit. Stay strong Tony, we're with you in spirit. anne Hello Oh My Dear Friends ! I hope that when you receive this e-mail that you are surrounded by God's Love & Protection. About a year or so ago I met a young man named at my internist office and we became friends. I try to encourage him as much as I could each time that I saw him there or when we spoke on the phone. I didn't saw him away from the internist office since he was still living a lifestyle that I have left behind and I didn't want to expose myself to those scenarios any more. Last month shared with me that his lab showed 500 cells which I told him that was not bad at all. With medication he could live a long time just to hang in there and pray. My friend killed himself this afternoon and his body was found in the living room by his roommate when he returned back from work. He was only 23 years old. My heart aches so much for him right now. I wish he would have called me; I would have run to him without hesitation but God will only know what impulse him to take his life. I'm left with just my prayers that Our Heavenly Father received him in heaven. I'm planning to attend his funeral service and hopefully I will not have a repeat experience from my last funeral service. Please keep 's family in prayer as they face this difficult hour. with a broken heart, Tony Nunez
Guest guest
Rhonda, What dose are you on, if I might ask? And even if your doc didn't " give you " a choice to take the meds 3x/day, you still have the choice. Most of us take PTU 3x/day until we are on such a small dose that it becomes impossible to cut the pill further. Guest guest
, Yeah, I know I have a choice...I just don't know much about the meds or hyperthyroidism. So I didn't think to ask. And to answer your question, I'm on 50mg. Is that good or bad? Again, I don't know alot about hyperthyroidism. Any info is helpful! And thanks for replying. Guest guest
Wow, Rhonda, that is a low starting dose (I am assuming that you are taking two 50mg tabs per day, adding up to 100mg total per day). That is probably too low for a starting dose, unless you were very mild hyperT. Most start at 300mg/day. What are your starting lab results? And did you get a baseline for WBC and liver function tests? Now is the time to start learning. You need to be on top of things if you are to feel your best and get good results with your treatment. This is a chronic disease, and you are in it for the long haul. Please start reading all you can, so you will be able to make informed decisions and manage your levels (doctors are a tool, not the ones in charge). I've seen too many people who just went along with the doctor's advice and had RAI, only to regret it later (your doc doesn't seem to be pushing it now, but may if he thinks you aren't responding to the ATDs, when in fact you may be mismanaged, as in starting on too low a dose). Please go to Mediboard.com and start with the Thyroid Awareness 101 thread: http://www.mediboard.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=004549 Then, you can get the Thyroid for Dummies book. Also, Elaine 's book is a bit more technical, but extremely valuable: Graves' Disease, A Practical Guide. Furthermore, there is Graves_Support Group, which is a home to me. Guest guest
Hey , Yeah, it's 100mg total. I don't know what my lab results were *exactly*..just that my T3 was high (don't know how high). I think he just wanted to start me on a lower dose and go from there. I will definitly check out those sites. Question...for some reason I haven't been very hungry lately. Would the medicine cause that? Just curious. I'm not complaining or anything, lol. Rhonda > >, > > > >Yeah, I know I have a choice...I just don't know much about the meds > >or hyperthyroidism. Guest guest
Rhonda, Although that is a low starting dose, if you are not very hungry, that could be a sign that your system is slowing down as it should. I can't emphasize enough the need for you to read, read, read up on everything related to Graves' and its treatment. Please take care of yourself and make conscious choices; don't let the doctor do the thinking for you. If you are on top of things, knowing what's going on and why, then you are likely to fare much better. Most people start on a higher dose so that the thyroid is blocked and the excess hormone in the gland gets used up. 100mg probably doesn't block it completely, and this is why it is usually not recommended to start at the lower dose. But if you are responding already, and your are heading in the right direction, then it may get you to where you need to be soon enough. 100mg is a good starting dose for those who are mildly hyperT, which would mean mild symptoms. I was mild hyperT, and was started on 200mg/day, which was too high for me. I should have been started on 100mg or less, and because I was overmedicated, I lost 1/3 of my hair. Live and learn. This is why I suggest that you do all you can to get informed. Of course, some things do have to come through experience, but the more you know the better. Guest guest
Hi - Sorry for your troubles!!! I'm pretty much a newbie at thyroid -- but I think people with Hashimotos Thyroiditis can fluctuate from Hypo to Hyper.... Your TSH indicates Hypo not Hyper.....I'm confused as to why he would say that was overactive aka - Hyper! TSH above 3.0 is Hypo. Did he say what medicine he wanted to put you on? You've come back to a good place --- take care & hope you can get well, Hello Hi, I haven't written in a very long time but I'm back. I thought I was doing a little better after I weaned myself off of the Armour (thought I was Hypo at the time) almost a year ago. I've been battling with emotional problems but I just attributed it to stress or PMS. Went to the doctor Friday and he calls today to tell me I have an overactive thyroid and he wants to put me on meds? I have been experiencing a lot of anxiety and panic attacks lately but then I also have the hypo symptoms of being tired, sluggish, unable to lose weight, dry skin, etc. I'm so confused now? He only did a TSH and it was 7.23. Any thoughts from anyone on why this may be happening? I have been drinking a lot of grean tea lately but that's only been in the last two months and I was having panic attacks long before. Could I be fluctuating between hypo and hyper? I have heard of that in some people. I told my doctor to hold off on prescribing anything, I wanted to consult you guys (the real experts). Thanks! You're right, I called my doctor back and the nurse I spoke to the first time, obviously didn't know what she was talking about. I'm going to set up an appt. with an endocrinologist. suser@... wrote:Hi - Sorry for your troubles!!! Guest guest
WHAT???????? You are severely hypothyroid and probably hypoadrenal (anxiety, panic) Why do you think an endo will help you? Endo might give you $ynthroid, that is all. Gracia > > Hi, > > I haven't written in a very long time but I'm back. Guest guest
Dear Jenn, Welcome to the group. I wish it was under better circumstances than PA, but you are with a great group of people. Everyone tries to help in any way we can. It's not easy and at times it can be an overwhelming disease. Having people to share your problems and emotions with really does make a difference. Don't' be afraid to post and write whenever you need to talk, vent or just have a question. There might not be any answers right away, but normally everyone tries. I'm like you as well in the fact that my psoriasis isn't near as bad as some of the people in the group. I guess I never realized how bad it could be until I've read some of their emails. Mine is the guttate form so I just have cigarette size holes or dots on my arms and legs. It's not pretty, but as I've found out things can always get worse. Anyway, I hope your doctor can find a medication to help you right away. That seems to be a big turning point for a lot of people. I have still yet to find one that will work for me and not wipe me out with side effects. I thought I was going to make it on Humira, but after only 2 shots I've still got asthma and a chest infection I can't seem to beat and it's been over a month. I'm hoping it's not the drug because I was feeling much better after only 2 shots. Everyday is a new surprise for me.lol. Good luck and welcome. I hope you find some answers and make a few new friends. Take care, Fran ----Original Message----- From: JENN13577@... [imailto:JENN13577@...] Sent: Sunday, April 18, 2004 7:14 PM Subject: [ ] Hello Hi I am Jenn and new to this group and new to PA ... I may not be as new to it as I thought but only recently was the diagnosis confirmed that I have Psoriatic Arthritis. I use to hear a phrase " the heartbreak of psoriasis " and never realized exactly what it meant ... now I know. Fortunately, for me ... mine does not seem to be as advanced as many of you seem to be and I am over sixty and its not as difficult as it would be if I had small children. I gather from the postings that ... you have to do a bit of experimenting with the meds to find what is best for you. There is not one that is universal for all. More than likely I will be a lurker ... for a while anyway until I can post with more knowledge of the disease. How is PA affecting your life...please fell free to share details and experiences with this disease. Guest guest
Hi , You want to have an ionized calcium level to confirm that your calcium is truly elevated, and you want to have a C-terminal parathyroid hormone (PTH) level. You wouldn't necessarily have to be fasting although an overnight fast is preferred. With these results, your doctor can tell if a further work-up is needed. I'm not sure where the sleep apnea fits in but a more reasonable approach would be to have these blood tests. You could see an internist or a Family Practice doc for these tests. Guest guest
Hi I believe your doctor is checking your parathyroid glands, not your thyroid. These glands affect your calcium production. Guest guest
Welcome , You have come to a great place. There are people here who are suffering now, are like me and am almost through with suffering. But we all share in common a bond for what we go through each and everyday and are always here for one another to lean on. Feel free to vent, ask questions or anything else that can help you. I'll pray for you as I do for all the people in this group and hope that you can find comfort and peace sooner instead of later. Jerry > Hello everyone, > I am new to the group.
