Guest guest
HI Jerri, I'm so glad you and I both found this group, too. I would highly recommend to you that you ask for an IEP evaluation, rather than a 504, or maybe in addition to a 504. A 504 might be a good place to start, though, while the IEP evaluation is happening. From start to finish, the IEP eval can take a few months to determine whether he'll qualify for IEP services. I would also recommend checking starfishadvocacy.com for resources on the IEP. See " parent resources " there. Just to clarify, I have heard it said that " The IEP is the law (meaning when there's an IEP, teachers must follow it by law), and the 504 is a 'gentleman's agreement'. Guest guest
Hi Jerri, Welcome to the group. I wish you luck with your son's school. I too have a 13 yr old with Aspergers and ADHD. He is not having such a good time with school. We have not been very lucky since he started middle school. His meltdowns escalated this year and we had to move him into a smaller self contained classroom at a new school. He is not violent or agressive, just verbally disrespectful to adults and peers and often noncompliant. We are now having problem with the new school. We recently started working with a ABA therapist and his meltdowns have gotten much less frequent. Knock on wood. My husband is in the army and I work for the army as well as a civilian. It hasn't been easy but coming here to vent or ask for advice has helped a lot. I wish you all the best! ne From: Jerri Crandall <jerricrandall@...>Subject: ( ) Hello Date: Tuesday, December 7, 2010, 12:24 AM Hello- I am a mom of 4 kiddos. From: linlai62 <linlai@...> Subject: [ ] Hello Date: Saturday, January 22, 2011, 11:15 AM Â Thought I should post an introduction after joining the group. Great to have a way to connect with parents of other young Lymies, as at least from my perspective it is not easy to find information relating to kids. My daughter got sick at 4.5 -- we are in Canada, where things are pretty dreadful in relation to diagnosis and treatment and it's only been very recently that there is even an acknowledgment that you can get it here. She was likely bitten on Vancouver Island, in BC -- big tourism trade and lots of reluctance to advertise that there is any risk there. My daughter started showing vague symptoms of something not being right within weeks of her Vancouver Island trip -- hypersensitivity to sound and light, moodiness, severe insomnia -- as well as a weird 'summer flu' with a bad cough that took her forever to recover from. By the end of the summer she was losing her memory and mostly stopped speaking aside from one or two word utterances or occasional lucid moments. By the end of the next six months she was severely cognitively disabled and didn't even recognize me or her sister, was having swallowing difficulties, loss of bladder control, streaky petechiael rashes (probably bart) and seizure-like episodes where she screamed uncontrollably and trying to injure herself. She spent nearly a month in the children's hospital where they diagnosed her with an unknown neurodegenerative illness which they said was probably genetic -- she was adopted so easy out for them -- or, childhood disintegration disorder, a severe later onset form of autism. As well, she spent weeks in a locked psychiatric ward -- where the head psychiatrist there told me it was to rule out Munchausen's by Proxy, or that I was causing it! During her psychiatric stay I happened to run across a newspaper article about a local teenager who had experienced similar symptoms and who had recovered, with Lyme treatment. Got her IgeneX tested and took her to Seattle for diagnosis and treatment -- she was pos. for Babesia Duncani -- her WB blots did have some starred bands but not IgeneX or CDC positive, but enough that treatment was initiated. Co-infections were hit first (babs, then bart -- she didn't test pos. for bart but had many of the symptoms: rages, sore soles of her feet, lots of suggestive rashes) and then the Lyme. Had a year and a half of treatment, though only orals as IV didn't seem to be an option for us without heading to the US. She did fairly well for the first six months off meds, though had many learning, language, and memory issues that hadn't been present before. She's now 7.5 and back on treatment (ceftin, amoxi and tinidazole), plus dexedrine for her executive function issues -- she was showing increasing signs of relapse over the fall. She's responded quite dramatically so the protocol does seem to be working, but I would like a more expert opinion eventually -- we have a sympathetic local child psychiatrist who agreed to take on treatment towards the end of her first round, basically following the same protocol as her old Lyme specialist. Not sure if any of the Lyme Literate US psychiatrists would be willing to consult, but our psychiatrist is open to that if we can find someone. In the Canadian system and with my work prescription benefits we have minimal costs if treatment can happen here. Things are certainly a lot better for my daughter than they were a few years ago, but the bigger question for me is now whether her memory and executive function troubles are the result of damage or if they might be reversed through further treatment. Looking forward to learning more through this group. Alberta, Canada

Guest guest
Hi, I have a 5 year old son who is diagnosed with Aspergers. We received early intervention and at the start of kindergarten we decided to mainstream him and just have a 504 plan for OT. This year has gone well, but we are very concerned about the next few. He is very unfocused! The kindergarten classes in my district all have an aid, but that won't be the case next year. He looks good on paper so it is hard to justify getting him services but being in his presence...oh, you all know all about that. Anyway, I've already learned some new things from some of the posts I've read and feel comforted to be among other parents who understand some of the trials and tribulations we go through. Guest guest
Hi Sue, Welcome to the group. Sounds like your son is going to need more help as the grades get higher if he is not able to focus. My son did horrible in Kindergarten and that is when he was misdiagnosed ADHD. By 1st grade he still couldn't read and needed speech pathology. Most of our kids look good on paper since they are smart but there is often a distinct mixture in some very strong areas and weak areas. Often the weak areas tend to have to cause major issues before the schools will realize the child needs more help. They are very REACTIVE rather than being PROACTIVE. Has your son had a complete evaluation done by the school? ne > From: suebeedee <suedayner@...> > Subject: ( ) Hello > > Date: Tuesday, March 1, 2011, 10:03 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Â > > > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > I have a 5 year old son who is diagnosed with Aspergers. > We received early intervention and at the start of > kindergarten we decided to mainstream him and just have a > 504 plan for OT. Guest guest
Here's my take on things. My son only got the official Aspie diagnosis a couple of months ago. I think you are VERY fortunate having gotten a diagnosis so young, so you can take action to help your son stay on track. Lemme tellya, it's being a real bear having to deal with getting Isaac on track with schoolwork. He is INCREDIBLY intelligent, but there is just some sorta disconnect when it comes to getting stuff done! I completely understand, because I was VERY much like him as a kid, and to a large extent still am. Unfocused. Oh yeah, that's what we're fighting now. Looking back on K-4th grade, I wish he had had more accountability, even if the grades weren't permanent. They didn't even give letter grades. We're only now working on setting up structures for getting things done. I look at some of the lists and techniques for austistic kids, structures, routines, charts, that sorta thing, and I WISH we had used those with Isaac when he was younger. He does fine with just the text, rather than the pretty color picture of a toothbrush and toothpaste, but he does need the structure. I've been working with him on an online task manager called Remember The Milk (www.rememberthemilk.com) which has an app for various smartphones. Isaac has an Android which he keeps in airplane mode at school, but he has gotten permission to use it as an electronic organizer so he enters assignments on that. He works SO much better with electronics (dad is a programmer so I guess that's no surprise) than paper. He can even take pictures of stuff on the board, rather than laboriously copying everything down. I do believe in letting kids be kids, but also realizing that structure can create freedom. If he learns how to do his homework efficiently, that frees him to have more recreation time, rather than sitting staring at the paper wondering what to do next. Ok, your son. Use the intervention as early as possible. To the extent possible, work with your son, aids, teachers, family members, etc. to develop the tools and tweak them as needed. As MUCH as you can, involve your son. Work with him, getting his suggestions. That way the solutions won't just be an external thing, but a process that HE has helped create and implement. That way HE OWNS it. Starting that early I believe is the way to go. Just wish we had started that with Isaac (and me) at age three instead of ten (or forty in my case)!
