Guest guest
Dear Foggs, (neat name) Yes, I want to grow our own food. Organic is shown to be richer in nutrients than mass produced vegees and fruits. The cost of adher- ing to an all organic diet forces us to try and grow our own. Also, I buy from a local farmer friend. We also take a phytochemical supple- ment: the adults and big kids in a powder form, the ten and under trio take them in a gummy bear form. Good point. I've been lax in this department and unable to finda good substitute, though I have to admit to not trying all that hard. If someone would market something that we could trust thatwould be terrific.> I am also interested to know if there are many of you whom havechosen to > grow their own food, have concerns about genetic alterations of " our " food, > or feel the need to purchase organic foods. Ayeah to that:) highly concerned about this, how much disk spacedo you have? Just kidding. You know EU has banned the use ofgenetically modified foods, however there is a problem when thosethat usethe genetically altered seeds contaminating the " pure " crops.http://www.purefoods.org has a lot of good information and I'vejoined Debbie Ortmann (Organic Consumers Association) in her efforts. I plan on getting my family involved they are the " real talkers " onthis issue.Foggs, I see you here, but I haven't gotten any of your e-maildelivered to my box and was wondering what happened to you. A Rutgers University Study, " Variations in Mineral Content in Vegetables " , compared mineral and trace mineral content in organic and inorganic vegetables, purchased at a standard supermarket. I probably don't have to tell you that almost ALL of the minerals in inorganic vegetables have been leached from them by the chemicals. There were 1,938 ppm of iron in organic tomatoes and an astounding 1 ppm in the inorganic specimens. Interestingly, the SALT was almost completely deleted from all inorganic specimens. Guest guest
Hi , PA is a terrible thing to have with drugs let alone without. I find it hard to believe that in the US you have to have insurance even for medication....?? While it is advisable to take something to prevent degeneration of your joints there are things you can do that are none drug related as well. Diet, has helped me immensely (no meat, wheat or diary), as has taking evening primrose oil etc. Go and talk to a naturopath to get advise on the above....it can be a part of your treatment and/or maintenance program. I wish you luck. Kate
Guest guest
Although I can't answer most of these questions I can tell you on important thing. Advocate for yourself! You are in charge! Doctors are not gods. Btw I wanted to mention to everyone I started reading this book which I highly recommend. It's called Chi Gong-the ancient chinese way to health by Dong and Aristide H. Esser. Keep an open mind i.e. don't think western and I think you'll all learn something which could help your health, mental, physical and spiritual well being. I'll let you all know about any other things I turn up. -Adriel > From: Puddinpanda@... > Reply- egroups > Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2000 04:43:39 EDT > egroups > Subject: [ ] (no subject) > > Good Morning, > I am fairly new to the group and have been reading all of the emails that > have been coming my way. Guest guest
Jill - does your doc ever do IV drips of steroids? I have had 3 and they help tremendously at least for a little while and they are much less painful than the injections. You are NOT a baby - your doctor is an ass! Guest guest
Jill - I believe that the tiredness and mood swings are somewhat drug related, but also a part of the disease. Also, about the dental work, I seem to get somewhat of a flare after any kind of procedure that is somewhat traumatic to my system. A cleaning might not bother me, but a filling might set off a flare (maybe the immune system fighting a foreign body in the filling materials??). Dental has been mild, but anything more major (surgery, an infection, etc.) really sets off a bad flare in me. As for your doctor - why are you continuing to go to someone who is totally unsupportive and insensitive?? Dump this # & $*%@ and find a doctor who understands that patients are human beings!! Take care,
Guest guest
[ ] (no subject)Good Morning, I am fairly new to the group and have been reading all of the emails that have been coming my way. I find all of this very interesting and informative but all of this information I am getting is raising quite a few questions. I am seeing in others quite a few things that I have seen happening with myself that my doctor just kind of brushes off and tells me to calm down that I am being neurotic. I have been seeing this Rheumy for about 9 years. At first he was caring and took his time with his patients, he is now at a point where if I see him for 3 minutes at my appointment it is a lot. Occasionally If I am in a bad flare up he will give me shots directly into the toe joint which are extremely painful, he tells me I am being a baby that he gives these shots to kids and it doesn't seem to hurt them. (what happened to compassion in the medical field, this stuff hurts) My questions to him are pretty much waylaid, it almost seems that he doesn't have the time to be bothered. I have gone through the normal routine of medication over the past years. I do have to say at one point the pain in my feet was so bad I could barely walk and he has gotten me past that hurdle. I am curious to know a things about the following issues that I am not getting straight answers from my Rheumy on.1. Is a baker cyst somehow related to PA? I had one removed about 8 years ago and it has recently reappeared? On one visit my right knee was really bothering me and just by the feel of it I could tell there was fluid that needed to be removed. I asked my Rheumy about it, he looked at it and said there is no fluid, I persuaded him to drain it and low and behold he removed about 4 syringes full of fluid (that I was being neurotic about)2. Is tonsillitis related to PA, I have my share of strept throat over the past 6 months3. About 3:00 every afternoon I could just go to sleep. Is this a side effect from Enbrel or is it just from the PA? (Doc tells me get more sleep) I work long and stressful. hours. My tiredness seems to have gotten worse since I started Enbrel but then again work has also been more stressful.4. The joints in a few of my toes are pretty much gone. One toe has a hole straight through the bone. When I ask the Doctor about my future with PA he manages to evade this question altogether.5. Can Enbrel cause mood swings or is it a mid life crisis (I'm 45 years old)6. Is mussel weakness in the legs and arms from the PA or medication.7. I have read a lot of emails about sinus infections, I seem to get a lot of themOne other thing, I have noticed since I started taking Enbrel I have had more colds and sinus infections.I know this is long but one last thing. Since taking Enbrel I need to take antibiotics when I have any dental work done. Even with 2000 mg of amoxicilian before my apt I got very sick two times, I now take antibiotics for 3 days. Any input on this? Thanks for listening, I know I was ramblingJillJill, wow lots of questions, I will try to answer what I can. First I don't know anything about baker's cysts. Cysts almost always have fluid in them. Injections into a joint can be very painful and no doctor should ever call a patient a baby. I think you are up against what we faced with Waynes first Rheumy. He couldn't fix this disease very well so he became disinterested. We dumped him and now have a very nice woman Rheumy who is much kinder and helpful. Tonsillitis is not related to PA but strept throat certainly stress's the system, who knows? You are working long stressful hours, have a disease that makes you tired and also are probably in pre menopause who wouldn't be tired. We can't get a doctor to talk about the prognosis with PA, I think they just don't know since the disease is so variableto each person, including age, other disease factors and degree of disease. Enbrel lowers your immune system and puts you at risk for infection, any infection sinus, colds, flu, if you get a temp above 100. call your doctor. Any dental work should have pre antibiotics. Hope that helped. Wayne hasn't been tired on the enbrel 3 rd shot today. He is some better but has up and down days. We are fighting hypertension now and just changed his blood pressure medication. Guest guest
Good Morning All, Thanks you all for your response to my email. It is great to finally have a support system. I do agree with all you that it is time to see a new Rheumy. I think the guilt factor has played a part up until now, I have been with him for 9 years. I wanted to join in on the chat line last night, but after a long day I fell asleep, maybe next week. Lately I can't seem to get enough sleep. Well, time to give myself my Enbrel and off to work I go. Jill

Guest guest
I take something from health store daily to increase my immune system. I also have diabetes, which suppresses immune system so I thought I should be doubly careful. Check with your local health food store - can't hurt. And I have not been sick with colds, virus, etc., for a year. Last year I was pretty "sickly."

Guest guest
Dani, I am really exhausted now... but I couldn't turn off my computer until I had made a response to your message. If " he " was inclined to leave you and your daughters... then you better count your blessings. You are fortunate to have 2 wonderful 'blessings' and you will make it... it isn't easy, but I would think it will be easier than having a person around the house and in your lives that really doesn't want to be there. You need support and you need to focus on you and your 2 daughters, you will be okay. This PA site is a great place for support, advice, and emotional comfort. I have been a member for nearly 3 months now... I was 'okay' before, but now this site has really been a source of comfort and inspiration for me... I can tell I am better now just having all these new friends on this PA site. We are all here for each other. I wish you the best of luck, you can do it on your own. #2-
Guest guest
Just wanted to share that I had chest pressure/soreness and sometimes unexplainable pain in my chest the whole time I was on MTX (5 years). At times it would cause me to cough--a cough so loud and " dry " (my husband's word) that my husband and son would become very alarmed, but nothing I or the my primary physician tried to stop it helped. The rheumy was not concerned about it as he stated he had other patients with same side effect of MTX. When the MTX was stopped after five years in June, 2000 these episodes stopped. MTX was reintroduced in January, 2002 soreness, " weird " pains " and cough started again. MTX was stopped after about a month, not because of this side effect but because of blood in urine which cleared gradually after stopping the MTX, with no explanation ever found for blood in urine by urologists (test results/x-rays negative). I occasionally have soreness in my chest now, but never the cough or pain. My rheumy says the soreness is chostochronditis--which apparently is common among PA sufferers. The action of the MTX the immune response apparently diminishes the body's ability to attack the chostochronditis. [ ] (no subject) > Hello, > > Just to introduce myself! Hi Betty - Ask your doc. if you have osteoporosis. A scan may have shown OP because you were on steriods, and it made you more suseptible. That could be why he went to the MTX and took you off steriods. Just a guess - but I sure would ask. As far as moisturizers go - I like them with tea tree oil. Many on the market have that now. Seems to be healing for me. I also use a soap with olive oil or a body gel with lots of moisturizers. By the way - My hubby bought me a sewing machine for Xmas and I still haven't figured out how to even thread it!! I guess I need to get lessons - so I envy your seamstress skills Take care,
Guest guest
Hi Tracey... I had gotten a few cortisone shots when something acted up really bad..but had not been on steriods... I had been on like 250 mg relafin twice a day..which didn't help...after the bone scan he put me on MTX 3 2.5 once a week... He didn't really talk about the scan much...but I do know he saw a lot of spurs all over...He has told me my bone density is very good... I don't have osterporosis... But I do have osteoarthritis...I take calcuim with vitamen D to help off set that...fortunately no one in my family has had osteoporosis...BUT then again...so far as I know I am the first to have Psoriatic arthritis... I also have gout..which I take 300 mg alluperinol each day for...and it has controlled it very well...I have now been 4 yrs without a gout attack! ) I have had 4 bad gout attacks since 1991 the last time I didn't have it in my feet...but I passed a bunch of little stones... " I knew what it was right off...and was able to take them in to Dr. " They sent it to the lab..and the stones were from uric acid...so I then decided to take gout very seriously and stay on the meds...No sense in anyone dying from gout in this day and time... thanks for your response...this seems like a very nice and caring group... Hey, I am in Va...if you were anywhere near, I would come over and show you how to thread up that machine and get going... I need to get a little home machine ....so I can do button holes.... I only have high speed industrials for work... betty (IN VA)
