Guest guest
I am quickly learning and realizing that I don’t think Risperdal is a good option for . We kept him on Concerta for a month while we gradually increased his Risperdal up to the current dose, which is 0.5mg in the morning, and 0.25 at about 6pm (it WAS at 4, but we moved it, because he was CRASHING asleep at like 5pm! EEK!). The thing is, he is gaining TOO much weight. I know we had a double whammy, because his appetite, and growth, were BOTH slowed by the Concerta. So with the removal of Concerta alone, I knew his appetite would “grow” to more healthy levels, and he’d likely “catch up” on some growth. But then, with the addition of Risperdal, he’s hungry ALL the time. Now… we don’t keep junk food kicking around, and he’s always been encouraged to choose healthy snacks. Which he does pretty good with. I am “strict”, so to speak, about what times we eat… that’s one benefit to him being an Aspie If I lay out the rules, he’ll follow them!! He DOESN’T over eat, he doesn’t indulge on junk food… but he has put on a lot of weight SUPER fast. And I’m starting to think that perhaps Risperdal isn’t the best choice for us. Now for those of you who have children on the spectrum who have a propensity to hit/kick/etc when they’re upset, or in response to perseverative sameness behavior… what other options do we have?? Would a mood stabilizer help? Or maybe even Zoloft or something, to help with the irritability?? To “take off the edge”, as Risperdal has certainly helped him do – but is it worth the weight gain??? Thanks for the input. FYI, he was 60lbs when we started, in 16 days he’d gone up to 67lbs, and in another month, he’d gone up to 73lbs. He’s 9yrs old =)
