Folic Acid: a new question

Since folic acid is one of our current topics. I have a question. I take 1 mg

of folic acid a day. I have heard that some do not take

the folic acid on the day they take their dose of MTX. It seems logical that it

would suppress the effectiveness of the MTX. What are your

opinions on this and do you take your dose of folic acid and the MTX on the same

day? What about the day after, also? Becky

Hi Becky,

My advice is to always check first with your RD regarding dosage of folic

acid. My RD freaked out when I told her I increased mine to 2 mg. She

explained that it depends on what dosage of MTX you are on.

My doctor at Columbia has always recommended a twelve hour on each side of

the shot with no folic acid on board. If you skip your 7 am dose, take your

shot at 7 pm, and then the next day after 7 am you can take your folic acid

again and for the next six full days!
