Judge: Hold off on mold repairs

BROWNSVILLE -- A judge issued a temporary restraining order Thursday barring

the Brownsville Independent School District from making repairs at two

schools where there have been recurring mold problems.

State District Judge Migdalia issued the order at the request of a

group of 500 teachers, staff and students who filed a lawsuit against

contractors and developers for Aiken Elementary School and Besteiro Middle

School.

A separate lawsuit has been filed by the district against the architect,

engineers, air conditioning contractor and general contractor for the two

schools.

School officials closed the schools in January while the district works with

agencies to test air quality and screen mold samples. Mold was first

discovered at the school in 1999 and recently displaced more than 1,800

students and dozens of teachers.
