Guest guest
Hello Friends, I am wondering how you have gotten your little one to take their medication. Since our son's diagnosis, last April, we have been crushing all tablets (Decadron, 6-MP, Methotrexate, etc.). However, I do not feel comfortable crushing certain drugs, such as 6-MP or Methotrexate. Any other ideas? As for the Decadron, we tried the liquid form, but our son would scream when he had to take it. Luckily, we found the tablet form and will never go back to that terrible liquid. We wish they would do something with the Zantac too. The only flavor we have been able to get is spearamint or peppermint. We just recently started mixing it with grape juice and it has helped. Looking for ideas on how you administer these meds to your child. Thank you, Sharla (mom to Adam, 3, DS & A.L.L. and , 9mos.)
Guest guest
We crushed everything, including the 6MP. We tried to be very careful not to touch the 6MP, but I always worried about that one, too. As for decadron, my son took the liquid IV form so we never had to deal with the nasty taste of the regular liquid. It was a little bit of a hassle to get, but was well worth it. My son started swallowing pills right before he turned 5. It was wonderful! Made life a lot easier. I know of lots of little kids who are able to take pills. Maybe eventually your son will be able to also. All my best. Guest guest
Sharla, We crushed EVERYTHING. Then, we mixed it with Blackberry Syrup. If we needed to do a liquid med, I had the FlavorX added to take the edge off of the taste. We found that the steroid pill was so much better than the liquid- still tasted nasty, but there was a lot less to go down. Best of luck! ~ [ ] Administering Medicine to a 3, almost 4 year old Hello Friends,I am wondering how you have gotten your little one to take their medication. Guest guest
I always crushed 6MP and methotrexate. My son has a gtube and we crushed them, put them in water, and shot them into the gtube. I know of other parents that crush them and mix them in yogurt or pudding. ( is off treatment now; two years today!) Guest guest
Chloe chewed (eww) almost everything. In the beginning we did the crushing thing, but one day I read about someone elses child chewing them, so I thought I would give it a shot, and she did it. I asked to make sure it was okay, and was told it was. , Mom to Chloe (age 6 Down Syndrome and Pre B Cell ALL dx 11/30/06 COG AALL-0331 low risk standard arm. Guest guest
Hi Sharla, We put all of our son's pills (thyroid med, steroids, 6MP, Thiouguaine, etc.) in a little bit of applesauce. The applesauce softens the pill just enough so it is easy for him to swallow, and it hids the taste enough for him too. Best of luck. Guest guest
My Rita (14-1/2/yrs. w/ALL) has also been chewing all her pills for about two years now - swallows with water ending up with a white-lipped smile. It can't be easy but she makes it seem so. I believe she may have less powerful tastebuds than non-DS folks which may help explain the apparent ease with which she does it. As a tot she liked the really, really hot sauces which few can take without coughing, sneezing or worse. Of course, you should be praying for guidance - the Lord has always been our help in time of trouble... S.
