Short on time tonight. The first thing you need to to is attack the sensory issues. Get him into a two day a week visitation to an occupational therapist who specializes in sensory integration disorder. I have found that the best way to help our son has been to slowly implement one solution after another focusing on one thing at a time. As you strip away their defecits you'll find them moe equipped to deal with the ones they have left. For example our son wouldn't hear kids call his name most of the time. So we literally practiced hearing his name everyday until he was much better. We gave all the kids skittles if they turned and made eye contact. This was the first step in helping him socially. Don't expect your kid to play with other children if he or she is afraid to run or jump.

Most important of all is to realize that your kid has a learning disability. Its not that they can't learn. They will just have to work much harder. But as they learn skills as mentioned before they will be slowly be more and more empowered. The sensory issues are the building blocks of controlling ones body. So you must attack those deficits in earnest. It will help your child in all areas of life from social skills, to learning, to handwriting, and yes even attention span.

Also make sure your child gets a much sleep as possible and I recommended Nordic Natural's OMEGA-3 gummies. They are mecury free. Supposedly OMEGA-3 has helped lots of kids with ADHD. I think it does help my son. If your child has sleeping issues consider the use of melatonin about one half hour before bedtime. Parents with kids who are more severe have to sometimes medicate their kids for depression, etc..... I think it goes without saying that try to avoid that if possible. Introducing real drugs makes it more difficult to distinguish between symptoms and side effects. You may have to but try the basics first. OT will probably recommend brushing, music therapy, for use at home. Both help control anxiety and cortisol levels which will take the edge off.

Make sure you try to get him on fixed schedule as much as possible. Try giving him several days notice on any kind of special planned events. I recommend strongly forced daily exercise if your child doesn't do it on his own. I could write books on what we done with our child. What I can tell you is two important overall tips The second I struggle with and it effects my patience.

1) If you never use it you never develope it. Your child will never develope the skills that are lacking and/or healthy adaptations and/or coping skills if they never practice.

2) Continue to demand your child to perform but inside keep lower your expectations with regard to performance. In otherwords be patient but persistant.

Our school is fantasitic. A few homeschooling parents were co-opting so much that they decided to start a great concept school here in Gainesville, FL. Orginally we decided to attend because our son also has a peanut allergy. Our school is only three days a week with two days of homeschool. You get the benefits of both formal instruction and the one on one tutoring. Plus the homeschool gives you the parent real time feedback which is even more important when dealing with an ASPIE.

School will be especially exhausting for your ASPIE so again the part time school has been ideal for us. 5 days a week would be very difficult for him. Especially when he started out in Kindergarten.

hope this helps,

Look up " NEST PROGRAM " in New York. You should be able to find all kinds of write ups about it. It's truly a systemic approach to helping kids on the spectrum. On Wed, Nov 17, 2010 at 8:37 PM, judymedeiros <judymedeiros@...> wrote:

Is his mood disorder under control? Many kids with bipolar or

depression are helped in therapuetic school settings where there

is an emphasis on therapy. But many many AS kids do not like or

do well in therapy unless it is very skill based. They often

ridgidly hold on to their perspectives and are not to flexible with

cognitive therapy approaches.

There are many schools that focus on kids with ADHD and learning

issues and kids with AS often do well in these smaller schools

where things are very structured and therapy is more skill

focused for the ADHD kids.

Then there is the third type of private school and these are

for kids with behavior problems. They will have a point system

in place for behavior management and a school store to

cash them in.

I would expect that NJ, Long Island NY area and the Boston area would have a lot

of small private schools. The midwest may have some near

Chicago. And on the east coast there must be many to in the Palo Alto area.

1) In NJ Cornerstone in springfield and Sage in Mahwah are

two therapupetic schools there are others.

2) In NJ Barnstable Academy and Community School are

schools for kids with ADHD and accept AS kids too.

Also there is Montgomery Academy in Gladstone Peapack.

3) In NJ a school for kids with behavior issues is Newmark

in Plainfield NJ.

I am not sure if I were you that moving is the only solution.

But it does seem that near the wealthy areas there are

a lot of services to be found.

good luck,

Pam

Also the ASCEND group in the Philedephia area is very very

active and supportive. If I were looking for a public education

I might look there. The Boston area too is very liberal with

social services. I would concern that Mass may be a

good place to find lots of help.

But again I am not sure you have to move or should move.

There is family support that you may have, jobs, friends

already established. School is very important to stabizing

a child for sure. But there are many other considerations

too such as you staying stable!

Thank you for all the input. He is 5 and has many issues he is dealing with. when he was diagnosed I found him OT and took him 2 times a week. The mood disorder hasnt been named or dealt with in any significant way. ( other than "Mom be more consistent" etc) The schools in southern Va , well the whole community here seems to be about 10 years behind at every level with unemployment now at almost 19%. It's a mess and the Principal here even asked why I wanted an IEP, stating they were willing to keep him. To me its babysitting and sit down and shut up attitudes. He is doing fine academically if you only look at his grades and his oral tests. This is due to the fact that he picks up a lot from his older 3 siblings, he is a sponge when you dont think he is listening. So if I am sending him there to socialize and learn to talk and deal positively with other people and it isnt working. They have recess for 10 minutes a day. They lose recess if they haven't obeyed the teacher. The whole place is run like a little military school, no talking in lines or at lunch. I've walked into the lunchroom to see kids having silent lunch so often. It's no wonder the kids are acting out. He went to the preschool program there and did well with less students and brain gym and morning hugs. Am I asking for too much? we adopted this little guy out of foster care system when we lived in CA he was a meth baby who got whooping cough and was on high frequency vents for 5 weeks before coming to my home. I of course love him so much and want life to give him a break.

sorry, I'm emotional today and rambling

So I'm unsure what type of school is best for him. I can't afford to pay for a private school. We discussed moving to an area that can help him, if that's what we need to do. I read on place that Columbia MO had a good system.. Dunno though.

My oldest daughter has CP and the cold and snow hurt her so it needs to be not a frigid area also.

Again, thx

He is so young to predict what school issues he may have.

I would push for the IEP. It may take a few years, but

usually they won't give services without it.

It is so hard anywhere to find places that have good

special services for kids and for adults.

He will need a child psychiatrist, and a therapist that agrees

ahead of time to advocate at the school.

We would have gotten nothing within one special therapist

that was a very strong advocate and really cared.
