Guest guest
Hello! Great news about the BMA. Just wanted to let you know that we have used many things to give meds orally and to mask the taste of a few, like Decadron (Dexamethazone) or Zofran. We have found that the one our son tolerates best is 100% grape juice. Welch's seems to be the strongest for flavor. Please feel free to contact us at any time. Our son, Adam, is now 4 and was diagnosed with ALL in April of 2008. We feel that we are learning more everyday. To answer another question posted was about hospital stays... Adam spent his first month in patient. Then, went back in 3 different times (about 7-10 days each time), during the first 6 months. These were due to what were probably viruses. He was in patient in June for the same thing.Hope this helps.SharlaSent via BlackBerry from T-MobileFrom: Craig Date: Fri, 18 Sep 2009 08:53:13 -0700 (PDT)< >Subject: [ ] another oral med question and good news Anyone think that there would be a problem mixing it with a small quantity of juice (third cup)? Also, our day 8 BMA results came back this AM. They read "Less than 1%"! We are ecstatic and hope that this indicates a better prognosis (he started at 90%, but his blast count was only 3700 at diagnosis). He also came back as Standard Risk two days ago. His ANC has recovered nicely from his initial dosing and is up around 1300. Guest guest
There could be two problem I think, mixing with juice, one being, that he would have to finish the entire cup of juice in order to ensure that he got the full dose of medication. The other one is that some of the meds (can't remember which now) have to be taken apart from citrus or milk products, I can't remember which ones, but I would think that you would have to be careful what kind of juice you were using. Guest guest
You are correct. One of the meds has a restriction with dairy and citrus. I will email again with the name of that med, once I can verify. Also, I should have clarified that we crush the meds (or dissolve the Zofran), put the powder in an oral syringe and then pull the grape juice through the syringe. I hope this makes sense.SharlaSent via BlackBerry from T-MobileFrom: sunshels@...Date: Fri, 18 Sep 2009 14:11:37 -0400< >Subject: Re: [ ] another oral med question and good news There could be two problem I think, mixing with juice, one being, that he would have to finish the entire cup of juice in order to ensure that he got the full dose of medication. Guest guest
Hello! Just looked into the med which you should not take with milk or citrus. This is the Mercaptopurine (6-MP), which is used in the Consolidation and Maintenance phases. We also crush this, place the powder in an oral syringe and use water to mix. Our son doesn't seem to mind the taste of this one, so we don't need to use anything to flavor it.Please let me know if I can help in any other way.SharlaSent via BlackBerry from T-MobileFrom: s_hank23@...Date: Sun, 20 Sep 2009 04:52:28 +0000< >Subject: Re: [ ] another oral med question and good newsYou are correct.
