Guest guest
The doctor wants my 9 yr. old Aspie to take traditional allergy shot. The test, skin scratches, did pick up sensitivities to milk, wheat and eggs, but he eats them with no supposed problems. The real problems seem to be environmental allergens and things like mammal hair. No pets or hippotherapy allowed:( I don't want to exacerbate autism symptoms. FYI, he is very high functioning. Guest guest
My son allergist says that there is a lot of side effects from the allergy shots. Also he told us that allergy tests are not 100% accurate. Having another test done 6 months later may show different results. My son's allergies can be very bothersome. Do you try allergy medications. Claritin causes behavoiral to get worse with my son. Zyrtec doesn't seem to be working quite as well. Those are the 2 safest allergy meds. Others have more side effects and have so many other ingrediants that its hard for him to take due to his seizure meds. Does your son have any asthma symptoms with the allergies? My son's treatment plan to advoid the allergy shots are........ Allergy medication, neb treatments, allergen spray on carpets, hardwood floors in his bedroom, all organtic clothing or cotton, same with bedding, hypoallergentic soaps , shampoos, laundry detergents. We advoid foods that are bothersome to him. MIlk was easy as he could not digest it anyway. I can tell if we give him something with milk than he will be cranky and stomach ache. Cool air is better for him to breath in rather than hot and dry. We swith back and forth with air conditioner and humidifier. ( humidifiers cause mold spores). Well hope this helps. Guest guest
My son has had allergic rhinitis since he was 3 months old.... Had him tested at 4 years old for allergies. Scratch test came up negative for anything!!!!!! He has suffered with allergic rhinitis for YEARS!!!! After puberty, his allergies got worse. Grass and tree pollen seemed to be a MAJOR problem for him. And, of course, it was exam time at school. We've done it all. Claritin didn't work. I can't think of the other prescription one that he took and it didn't effect him. When he had major issues, once Mucinex came out, that was a wonder drug for him during flare-ups. But he'd practically live on it. Finally, when he was 15, I went and had him re-tested. He was off-the-charts for tree and grass. He also tested positive for cat and dog (which we have), and we were asked if he ever had problems with peanut butter. (Which he's eaten since he was little and he's never had a problem with). The allergist put him on two nasal sprays a day for 3 months. And he started him on allergy shots. We have seen an improvement in the grass/tree pollen season this year. He could actually concentrate on exams! He still takes Flosnase nasal spray daily. He had stopped it for awhile, but I think the OCD issue makes him feel that he needs it in order to feel "good" each day. I haven't seen any changes in him on the asperger's side of things. If nothing else, it's helped him not have as many sinus/allergic rhinitis attacks. And he's able to keep from getting sick. He's rarely had a fever with his allergic rhinitis anymore. But he's had much fewer bouts of it now that he's had the shots for 2 years. Hope this helps. -Melinda, Mom to , 17, AS, ADHD, OCD Casey, 14, going on 30 , 8, speech delay, possible APD Zac, 2, possible ADHD, ALL BOY! Guest guest
Thank you for your informative post, Melinda! My son (age 10/AS), has extremely bad pet allergies. He is also very allergic to dust. He takes a generic form of Zyrtec, but he still has "itchy eyes" all the time. I would love for my son to have the love and companionship of a dog --- it would be so good for him! Does anyone have any experience with allergy shots successfully working so that a child can have a pet? Are there any indoor pets besides reptiles and fish that do not cause dander allergies? I wish he could have a pet that he could have a "relationship" with. Any advice? Thank you, Cassie From: asmallbizmom <asmallbizmom>Subject: ( ) Allergy shots??? Yes or no? Guest guest
The Mucinex kept him from getting an infection, I guess. It helped him be able to breathe and not cough his head off when he got the sinus issues. But so far, he hasn't had them because he's been on the nasal sprays (which you have to watch because they can have steroids-but there are some that can be used because I had to ask while I was pregnant for one. It made living while the sinus was going on bareable. It was the best thing we found before he went on shots. -Melinda From: susanonderko <susanonderko@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Allergy shots??? Guest guest
I have a friend who swears that Accupunture cured her severe Fall allergies. She had had them all her life and went to an accupunturist as an adult, and hasn't had any since. Don't know how well it would work on others, but just want to throw out a non-medicine alternative. Guest guest
My husband is an acupuncturist and he has a lot of enthusiastic patients who come to him for allergy relief. He often prescribes herbal remedies for allergies. I don't know what the herbs are, but wanted to confirm that acupuncture can help. For children, my husband usually doesn't use needles, just the gentle application of pressure or heat on the acupuncture points.
Guest guest
Cassie, Thank you. Now I remember what the name of the other medication was on-Zyrtec thanks to your post. It did nothing for him. has cat and dog in his allergy shots, and we have both. The dog is more of an outside dog, so he doesn't have much contact with him. He remains in the laundry room when he is in because he is too wild to be let loose in the house. We also have 3 cats. (We didn't know he was allergic to cats until after we'd gotten cats.) While does have OCD which causes him to do extra handwashing measures, he also makes sure he washes his hands after handling the cats. And he's done well with them here. My best friend was allergic to cats and dogs, (I think she was just allergic to her whole environment), and they had a dog. The allergist had told them to get a short-haired dog and certain breeds have less dander than others. And she had no problems with the dog. But I guess it's what is tolerable for your son. I know a lot of people who own dogs and cats and take the shots so they can have them. ('s been exposed to cats all his life and he's manage to survive all the cats.) Hope this helps. -Melinda From: asmallbizmom <asmallbizmom>Subject: ( ) Allergy shots??? Yes or no?
