Your school may tell you that they do not need to provide the

" best " evaluation just an academic evaluation. And they often

use professionals that provide reasonable rates to schools.

On the other hand you may ask the doctor that made the suggestion

the particular neuropsychologist to write a letter that

states his recommendation and why. Some towns in NJ where

I live have very good neuropsychologist they hire. Other

towns resist this totally and want the child to be seen by a

neurologist MD instead.

My daughter has a medical condition and AS syndrome. I choice

a neuropsych that would gain her cooperation and we paid for it.

You really do want a private neuropsy they do better testing. Get the Bipolar

Child Book and there is a chapter on neuropsychological testing in child that

explains the tests. I have not found too many

books that list the tests that should be done and why.

Our neuropsy on the other hand in spite of being very good totally

missed the medical condition and I doubt anyone would have

it is a rare condition. The medical condition had to be

diagnosed by other medical specialists.

The other issue is I am not sure how much executive function

testing can be done on a 5 year old. We had to wait until

my daughter was 9 years old to do some of the tests for

processing speed, working memory, transitioning mindset,

attentional issues etc.

I am not sure I would pay $4000 at age 5. Perhaps you should see

a neurologist and have insurance cover it. I did pay myself at

age 9 and it was worth the money. There are also peditricians

that are called developmental peditricians that do evaluations

on young children.

We NEED this. My daughter's situation is very complicated and we need this and

the school needs this so we know what the heck she REALLY needs.

The particular Neuropsychologist we would be using is a specialist in my

daughter's situation and there is no one here who can do what they can do for

her. A neurologist would be useless in her situation because we are looking at

the effect of her Lyme encephalopathy from congenital Lyme and how it is

affecting her and most docs refuse to believe her situation could have anything

to do with Lyme even though it definitely is affecting things. This

Neuropsychologist understands both and can look at both and see what's going on

and what she needs, etc.

But does anyone know the actual PROCESS of applying for reimbursement or payment

for an IEE? Who do I talk to? The head of the school district? Her teacher? Her

therapists? The latter are not very helpful.

Her developmental pediatrician has made her opinion known in writing about what

services my daughter should get in the Fall and those I am in agreement with.

She is not a team however and doesn't do visits to schools.

First step is to request a IEP evaluation and include the

input from the developmental peditrician as a reason an

IEP eval is warranted.

Then include you would like a neuropyschological evaluation

done. How much do you want to use this particular expert?

Are you willing to pay for it? You can say you really

need this specilist because she has this medical

issue. Wait and see what the response is.

IF they agree ok. IF they refuse the test completely

or your specialist. Back to advocacy. Be reasonable and

not mad. Ask if their specilist can talk to your specialist

and address your issues. This is reasonable. And you want

your expert to do some advocacy. Believe me you need

your experts on board. Consider this making your case.

You don't show up without your experts.

You can request up front a functional behavioral assessment.

We did all these things. We paid for the neuropsy

eval. Because the school refused to do an IEP eval.

Then with the report we requested an IEP eval and asked for the

neuropsch eval to be included as input for the IEP.

If you look at this like building a legal case ( I am not

for parents fighting schools in court at all) you need

your DX, you need experts on your side and you

need to be reasnable (even though this is about your

child and it can be hard not to get impatient).

It is your director of special services that in the end will

make many decisions. The IEP team itself is suppose to meet and

make decisions as a team. The IEP team is the people that have done the

evaluations OT, PT, teacher, learning consultant, social worker and school

psychologist. IF your child has behavioral

problems you can request a functional behavior assesment

be done (I did because my daughter was having issues

in school like taking too long at everything). And she

was socially excluded.

I am not sure how much more I should right. Take the first

steps and tell us how it goes.

best of luck,
