Guest guest
Hello, For those of you with adult children looking for careers, I wanted to share with you information of a consulting company that hire people with disabilities. I saw the President and CEO give a presentation yesterday at my company. She is very passionate about helping people get professional careers--at times she was nearly yelling, at other times crying. She is very dedicated. Epilepsy nearly killed her in her 20's as it went undiagnosed for so long. After recovering from major brain surgery she saw firsthand how hard it is for people with disabilites to obtain meaningful careers and started this consulting company. They are in 18 states and have a sister company in Canada. She goes to large companies and obtains 3 year committments from them to hire x amount of her employees. She pays all their benefits (no cost to the employee) and the hiring company pays the hourly rate. My company is in the process of hiring some - but I don't know the specifics. I will be contacting the group in charge of it as they are looking for volunteers to help out. I asked her specifically if they employee people with HFA/AS and she said yes. I think that's true as she then started in about their training/orientation for new people including very basic things, like #1 is to take a shower everyday! The website is www.benderconsult.com/index2.html . The president is Joyce Bender, and she also runs the Disability Matters internet radio program. She is fairly famous in the disability rights advocacy realm. Here is some info from the website: Disability Matters with Joyce Bender is one of the first international talk radio shows with real-time captioning focused on the employment and empowerment of people with disabilities. Hear prominent disability leaders such as Congressman Tony Coelho, Governor Dick Thornburgh, Andy Imparato and senior executives from the private sector. Disability Matters is on the VoiceAmerica Channel (www.voice.voiceamerica.com)every Tuesday from 2:00pm - 3:00 pm Eastern Time. The toll free caller/listener number is 1-866-472-5788.
