I only found our my son had Aspergers in the 2nd grade. But if I had known in 1st grade about the Asp. I would not have delayed because it only prolongs the inevitable. I'm getting an IEP tomorrow and see how that goes. Sorry I have no advise but if I can ask you, What would be the advantage to delaying?

Someone just mentioned about it being better to delay first grade instead of kindergarten? What are your thoughts? Thanks,

I guess it just depends on what services/ resources the children are getting in kindergarten vs 1st grade. Where I live the inhome services are better than what the school can offer( all our kids are mainstreamed) so a lot of families decide to keep them home that extra year.

Do you mean to make a child repeat K two times and then go to first grade? I personally don't follow the logic with this. If anything I think it's entirely more productive to delay k for younger ones and especially boys--nt's as well--but especially boys in our community. The lack of maturity level is the greatest issue I have and inevitably remains to be a challenge as they age, still.

My son did 2 years of kindergarten...the we were in agreement with the teachers that he needed another year of maturity to be able to handle 1st grade and it did help. Getting the 2 years of the same skills was good, because the first year they worked more on self regulation and social skills and then the 2nd year he was better able to handle the cirriculum and continue to learn other skills he needed. First grade went better than we expected and he's doing great in 2nd grade so far. It was the best choice we made. He was in an integrated full day kindergarten as a "community" child the first year and in mid year I got the diagnosis...the 2nd year of kinder he was in under an IEP.

Good luck....don't beat yourself up over whatever you choose. Just move forward. It's the best we can do as parents:)Debbie
