Guest guest
, My son went to school through our local district. Unfortunately, with the financial mess in CA and a new school board, there is no way on this earth I would send him to the district now had he not already graduated. He was not diagnosed with AS until he was 16 1/2. He had been in the special ed program because of his delays associated with congenital problems (all of which have been surgically corrected). He did infant stimulation at a school that originally went from K-12, all of the kids having problems such as AS or autism OR IQ's so high off the wall they were doing college work at 10. Due to lots of problems, the school switched to a 6-12. I wanted my son to go there when he went into 6th grade, but his father (my ex) refused to let me send him. The school has since been sold and I do not personally know anyone who has a child there. It is in Laguna Hills, CA which is close to the beach, 30 miles from Disneyland and about 60 miles from all that Los Angeles has to offer. The school is New Vistas. http://www.newvistaschool.org/ Debbi in SO CA Mom to 24 and almost 21 > > Hi, everyone-- > > I just joined this group, and have tried to search the archives for this question, but wow, this is a busy group! :-) The search engine keeps stalling, too. Guest guest
There is a school that specializes in Aspergers called Orion Academy in Moraga, California (northern California, just east of San Francisco) that I have heard good things about. My daughter's tutor (who himself has a son with NVLD and has worked wonderfully with our daughter) toured the school at one point and had very complimentary things to say. For us, it is too far... but you might take a look. I do not know what the tuition is. http://www.orionacademy.org/index.shtml > > > > Hi, everyone-- > > > > I just joined this group, and have tried to search the archives for this question, but wow, this is a busy group! :-) The search engine keeps stalling, too. Guest guest
I work as Director of Admissions at a middle/high school for academically advanced boys in Washington DC. We have some very high functioning Aspies there -- many of the boys are quirky so they just fit right in. It could be an incredible experience for a smart boy who lacks social prowess. The whole high school is only 153 kids. Let me know if you want to learn more. E.V. Guest guest
Orion's fees are about $25k or more. Most private schools in the area charge that and more. Orion only has 8 students per grade, so they can pick and choose who attends. Guest guest
Thanks so much for your replies! If anyone else has any other ideas, please let us know! I'm glad that this discussion will be in the archives, whether or not I'm successful in finding the right school. Does anyone know anything about the Landmark School in MA? My son's psychiatrist mentioned it. The website talks about language-based learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, not things like AS. If I end up gathering a bunch of useful info, maybe I can compile it and it can go in the files section? Thanks again! in PA
