Guest guest
First on the sleep apnea. Have you checked on your daughter at night. Sleep apnea is easy to hear. My daughter would grasp for a breath (age 3 - 5). She had her tonsils out at age 5. She would also gag on food if she ate to much. I always thought you needed a learning consultant to DX dyslexia. There are special psychologists called a neuropsychology that also can test for cognitive skills. They will find out if your child has ADHD, autism, can separate out OCD from autism. Does your daughter have OCD or does she have Asperger or autism, PDD. Kids on the spectrum have obsessive interests, get lost in obsessions with things. Kids with OCD (and my daughter does have AS and OCD) are bothered by OCD thoughts. They are upset to touch germs for example and will wash excessively. I did not find any child psychiatrist very helpful in sorting out autism from anxiety from OCD. The pyschiatrist are good at separating out anxiety from bipolar symptoms. The pyschiatrist are good at medication choices when there are side effects. This is there area of specialty. hope this helps, Pam > > Okay, went to see our new doctor yesterday. (Insurance reason and our current doctor has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and the outlook isn't good.) Switching doctors is always scary for me to begin with. However, our insurance may require a referral to see a psychiatrist or psychologist even though I know in most cases behavioral health is usually a self-referral. But I thought I'd at least start with him to get the ball rolling. > > I was taking my daughter, 9, to see him to discuss getting her formally diagnosed with dyslexia and OCD. Okay, he tells me that she may have sleep apnea because she snores and her throat opening is smaller than average. So, now I have to see an ENT and possibly a sleep specialist. He wants me to rule out sleep apnea as a possible means of what is going on with her. (Rolling my eyes.) > > Okay, he suggests I see a psychologist to diagnose the dyslexia. I was thinking I needed to see a pediatric neurologist. I'll take the psychologist because it's closer, but then do I need to see a psychiatrist for the OCD? I'm confused as to which to do what. > > Any help would certainly be appreciated as I am sitting here in front of my insurance booklet trying to figure out who to see. > > -Melinda >
Guest guest
I think a pediatric neurologist would be able to dx the OCD too. Sleep apnea can also exist with the other two problems. Like it's not enough, I know. My dh is a polysomnographer (does sleep studies on people), btw. We are getting more in common all the time. lol.
