I took my 10 yr old aspie to his first swim lesson this morning and it went great! I had talked to the manager before hand and said she would work with him. She put him in with a group that was about 6 yrs or so and it went great. My advice is always ask if accomodations can be made. This is really the first year that I am determined that he is going to experience what other kids do so I have really stepped out on a limb and just ask. What are they going to say "no"? I often get that "Oh if they only had a school in this area for him" . The reality is we have to make these kids fit into this society because this society is not going to change for them.

I found a camp to send him to called Camp Courageous. It is 4 hours away but I think it will be a terrific opportunity for him. He does not have "friends" so this will give him the opportunity to be with other kids like him. I am very excited for him!

Okay, sorry, but I just again wanted to say that I am not sure Camp Courageous will be a good fit for him. It is mostly for MR kids and adults, so an aspie might feel really weird there, like if he was put into a special education class suddenly. In other words there won't be more then 1 or 2 other kids like him there, at the most (or at least thats what I would imagine, I asked about it when I was like his age and thats what my mom told me.) It isn't quite the same but seriously check Camp Tanager out which is near Cedar Rapids (so not that much farther away), less special needs kids there but still a good deal, and a lot of people who work there work in the Tanager Place group home.
