Guest guest
Hi o, Is your daughter seeing a pediatric rheumatologist? It probably wouldn't hurt for you to ask for a referral to a nutritionist if you have a lot of questions, but I make sure that my son eats a healthy, well balanced diet. When diagnosed, my son was three. A lot will depend on the foods your daughter is already accustomed to eating. If your doctor was suggesting that you limit how much your child eats, I am here to tell you that when first on high doses of steriods my little guy was eating twice what I ate at mealtime and waking me up at 2 - 3 am because of hunger. Not only can the steriods cause weight gain on their own, they increase the appetite tremendously. gained a lot of weight quickly. When I expressed concern on the slowness of the taper and his continued high weight, one doctor looked at me and said that he would lose weight as the dose was lowered, but not eating cookies and cake. I took immediate offense to that. I wish I could see that Doctor just once - to show her how he did lose weight, and yes my son does get to eat cookies and cake - along with the fruits and vegetables and hot dogs and macaroni and other meats, carbs etc. He eats a balanced diet, no different than before the steriods, and the weight fell off almost as quickly as it came on, once the dose got low enough. When we upped his steriods in December, he gained weight quickly again, and even though his dose is still rather high, after a month or two of tapering, his weight has dropped back down. His appetite increased when we raised the steriods in the winter, but not as much as it had in the past. I hope I haven't confused you. You didn't say how old your daughter is. The concern about weight will differ according to age. My son was too young to be bothered by it, until a child at his preschool called him a fat baby. Even then, I told him he had gained some weight because of his medicine, that he certainly wasn't fat and not to worry about it. That satisfied him at the time. Maintain a balanced diet, and exercise as her symptoms permit. Beyond that, the steriods are going to have the affect they are going to have. Hopefully, you will be able to get the dose lowered to a level where the affect is minimal. Good luck! Guest guest
Hi o, My daughter is on same meds as yours except for the asthma meds. I have Brittany eat alot of fish, turkey and chicken. I know how the binging goes so I keep fresh fruits and veggies on hand so that she can snack on those between meals. When Brittany was diagnosed back in Jan. she was down to 65 lbs and since she has been on pred she has gained about 15 lbs (which that didn't hurt her at all) I have gotten some of my recipes from www.deliciousdecisions.org which is the American Heart Association website and also from www.recipesource.com but on that one I mainly to the poultry, fish and seafood in the main dish area. It gives you alternatives to fixing those so you don't get tired of eating it the same way all the time. Anyway I hopes this helps. mom to Brittany (12 poly) -----Original Message-----From: o Salas [mailto:robertosalas@...]Sent: Thursday, June 26, 2003 6:51 PM Subject: introduction and question Hi All, My daughter got diagnosed with jra about 2 months ago. Guest guest
My daughter Casey (12, poly) is on the same regimen of meds as your daughter. She has gained nearly 20# from the pred, plus the comparative lack of activity since she came out of a 6-year remission in April. I have been looking into Mediterranian-type diets, for both weight issues and also because it seems to have some benefit for folks with RA (and other auto-immune diseases) in general. Since I'm only in the research stages there are no successes (or failures) to report but it may be of interest anyway. Best of luck with your daughter. Guest guest
My daughter is turning 8 next month. She is seeing a rheumatologist in San . He is the one that caught it and helped her to regain movement and the ability to walk. She is gaining weight and is getting bigger and we have been told to let her snack on fruits, veggies, rice cakes and water. The difficult part she is definitely eating more. Then talking to another family, a lady mentioned that they can become diabetic if we do not watch their diets. I wanted to see what other children are given. Thanks for the reply. Guest guest
Hiya and welcome. OK, the fat going on round the back and middle is an age thing. Hormone levels at puberty/early adulthood cause any fat gained to mostly go on the hips and breasts and thighs. As we get older our hormone ratios change and fat added then tends to be plonked around the abdomen. That's just how it is, unfortunately. The same thing has happened to me. I always had a nice flat stomach and trim waist and since I gained weight it's all gone round the waist. So now I don't like my legs OR my abdomen. LOL. You say you're a cardio queen and you starve on 400 calories a day and then binge and you don't really want to do weights. I have a question for you.... IS WHAT YOU ARE DOING WORKING FOR YOU???? The definition of insanity, to quote Bill (i think) is to do what you've always done and expect a different result. All that starving and excess cardio has caused your body to eat up your muscles just to survive. Less muscles means a lower metabolism and less ability to burn calories. So what happens? You gain more weight on the same amount of food. You NEED to do the weights! You NEED to eat enough to fuel your workouts! That's way more important than doing ANY cardio (you should do the cardio too though, hehe). You probably won't gain any weight, but even if you did, it would be a couple of pounds and THEN it would start to drop off again. I hope this hasn't sounded too harsh, but you sound like you're panicking and about to do something not BFL and then think that BFL doesn't work. Do it like it is in the book and it will work for you. I'm a funny one to talk, I know, because I have binging issues like crazy, but if I'm eating every 2-3 hours, with 200-300 calories a meal, I'm usually ok, it's when I skip a meal or am really late getting one that I fall face down into the cookie jar. Good luck and keep posting here, it's a big help! Guest guest
Hi Phoenix, I appreciate you're reply, and, you're right, what I'm doing now (and have been doing for year) really isn't working. It's just a temporary solution. After I had my girls, I starved myself back to prepregnancy weight, and I was able to maintain it for years only by alternately restricting and compulsively exercising and bingeing. I never binged until I started cutting calories. I thought the abdominal and back fat had something to do with age, even though I'm not 30 yet, but I guess there's a difference between 25 and 30; for me the last couple of years have been the hardest in terms of maintaining weight loss. Oh, one thing, I mistyped in my last post; I eat 1000 cals a day or so, not 400, but I've gone as low as 600; I can usually maintain that for a few days before I lose control. It's terrible, because I want to be a good example for my daughters. They notice more than I think. My husband is not support at all; he's in pretty good shape, but can pretty much eat whatever he wants, so he brings junk into the house. Anyway, thanks again. Guest guest
Hi again Devyn, I'm just 30, and I agree. There's a big difference between 25 and 30 when it comes to where the fat goes. Blah! Daughters are a really good reason for getting our own food hangups under control, aren't they? My wee girl is only 2, but I SO want her to have a healthy " moderation is the key and healthy, wholefoods are best " approach to life. OH, and I'm glad it wasn't really 400 calories a day. My eyes were actually bugging out when I read that number. Of course, I don't even cope well with 1500 calories a day (hungry all the time), so I still don't know how you did it. Lol. My hubby is supportive of the concept, but not always in the execution. Often though, he will now at least ASK if it's OK if he brings home Mcs or icecream and choc sauce for himself. At least that way I can prepare for the temptation. I'm sad that your partner is completely not helping you, but I guess in the end, it's all up to us. By the way, if you want to see the living proof that you can eat and still look fantastic, go to see Skwiggs World o' Weirdness Website. She's the current home page lady (and the moderator of this board) and she eats about 2500 calories a day. She has many cool articles there on how it all works and how NOT to do things. And she's completely nuts, of course, but that's cool. (don't kill me Skwigg!) Phoenix
Guest guest
Devyn, First off, welcome to the group. You will find a lot of support here. Second, go dig out your Body for Life book and read it again. Then, read it again. Put it in the bathroom and read it while you are..umm..thinking (yeah, that's what we'll call it...thinking). The fact is that you need to eat to lose weight. Think of it this way, when you restrict calories to a consistent low your body will go into 'starvation mode'. It thinks " Oh crap..no food..slow things down or we're gonna die " . So it slows your metabolism down. So then what? Eat even less and slow down your metabolism more? What's the eventual goal here? Eat nothing? Skwigg has a great website where she addresses her own battles with this kind of thinking and you may find it an eyeopener. http://members.tripod.com/skwigg/ Next I would suggest a visit to Dr. Hussman's website. TONS and TONS of info there that should help a lot: http://www.hussman.org/fitness/ Finally, My next favorite read is from Mistress Krista. She's a real diva and has her collective crap all together. Though not specifically BFL related, she really explains the importance of eating, how calories work, blah blah blah. But she does it in a way that doesn't reek of text books. http://www.stumptuous.com/weights.html Cardio alone just won't do it. Read what Krista has to say about weight training for women. She will really open your eyes. I am a former dancer so cardio is a lot of fun for me. The thought of weight training really seemed..well..completely alien to me. But now, I love it!! I get down in my basement with my weights and grunt, spit and sweat just like any man in the gym. I hope I haven't overloaded you too much. Guest guest
Hon, I am 4'10.5 " tall and living on 600 cal./day for several days would drive me insane. Litterally. Your body can NOT do all of the things it needs to do (such as properly maintain hormone levels (leading to thyroid and fertility issues), neurotransmitters (the bitch factor). And to do it for several days simply puts your body into starvation mode. By keeping it fed constantly you keep your metabolism chugging along. You need to eat to lose weight. Guest guest
hey devyn... i just wanted to say, as a daughter, that yes, i think your daughters probably notice. i say this because both my mother, father, and my step mother have struggeled with eating disorders all of their lives, and hence, all of mine. i wasnt even into puberty before i started thinking about 'dieting', i'd tell people i was 'watching my weight for swimsuit season', doing crunches on the living room floor in my spare time, and evaluating my meals and everyone elses. i was 6 years old! SIX! my step mother would routinely sit at the table after having spent hours preparing a huge meal for the family, and not eat a thing. because she was beautiful, thin, had my fathers attention, and i wanted to be like her and for her to love me, i would try to skip dinner too. then my sister would try. then the three of us began a kind of semi-silent competition which lasted for years. my mother tried to bribe me to be 'successful' on my 'diets' when i was in grade school by promising to by me shoes or clothes or toys if i only ate certain things. this is how i remember bonding with my mother, and learning to hate her, this panic i felt over whether or not i could be 'good' enough to have good things. i know she did the best she could, and i cant blame her- her mother was a beauty queen. my father would pick me up from school and drive us to a fast food place. he'd go through the drive through, get us both meals. i'd eat mine, and he'd eat his. fast. then he'd pull over, throw his trash away, and drive to another drive through and get himself another meal. drive around eating, throw his trash out, and go to another one. while i sat there working on my one meal, he'd go through five or six. then we'd go home and have dinner with the family like nothing happened. i didnt even remember this and really think about how it affected me until just a few months ago. but how can i blame him? he spent his life being told he was fat and being denied food by his mother, and hiding in the pantry in the middle of the night eating canned goods. my mother, my father, and my step mother all excersized compulsively. all three became aerobics instructors and personal trainers. they worked at a gym and i spent a majority of my time after school there. everyone in my immediate family has had some kindof plastic surgery (tummy tuck, breast augmentation, lipo, etc) i could go on and on, but the bottom line is that i was addicted to diet pills by 9, depressed, destructive and on drugs by 11, and in the hospital for anorexia by 13. i have struggeled to overcome it every day since then, with varrying degrees of success. (it's only in this past year, and really completely only this past 2 months when i've been doing BFL that i've felt like i've really come close to regarding my body healthfully and with respect.) i dont speak to my father or step mother at all, and havent in years. i've only this year had the strength to tell my mother that she is under no circumstances to ever discuss dieting with me, including criticizing how little i eat at meals, how much, in what variety, or how skinny i look or dont look, or to ever call me up to tell me about her 'successes' or 'failures' on whatever diet she's on. it's only this year that i've realized how much my heart breaks every time any of these issues come up around her; how inextricably intertwined i feel her love, both for me and herself, are with the elusive goal of 'thinness'. of all of us, i think i'm the only one whose learned that it was always about love, and thinness was never really the goal at all. your daughters love you. they want your love, and they are WATCHING. they're like sponges. they're absorbing everything the see- even the things you think they dont understand. i know you're a woman, with a life and a history. they dont have that luxury. what they are learning from you will become their history. dont let that history be about pain and deprivation. maybe they wont be like me, they wont be so willing to take on their parents neurosis...but many children are not able to maintain that kind of distance. good luck, cera www.strangestlittlemonster.com www.seemescreaming.com > > Re: Introduction and Question > > > > >>Hi Phoenix, >> >>I appreciate you're reply, and, you're right, what I'm doing now (and >>have been doing for year) really isn't working. Guest guest
Cera, Thanks so much for sharing this. It meant a lot to me. It just about made me cry. I also grew up with a mom who had weight issues, nothing as extreme as your household, but she was always trying to lose those last ten pounds. When I was a thirteen, I went through a major growth spurt and went from a gangly girl to a full-blown curvy woman. Prior to that, I'd been a picky eater, but all of a sudden I was hungry all the time, and I got really into cooking and eating. I put on a bit of weight, although I wasn't overweight by any means. Well, my mom started scolding me, telling me I shouldn't eat so much or I shouldn't have this or that, or I'd get fat, and then no boys would like me. It was horrible. I vowed NEVER to do that to my daughters, and I try not to share my body disatisfaction in front of them. I talk about how much I like food, and we eat normal food. We have treats and stuff. I've raised them to like healthy food; they prefer fruit over cookies, and they're very active, involved in soccer and softball. They did gymnastics for a while, but I was worried about the pressure to be thin, so I stirred them more in the direction of soccer, and they took to that. Thus far they have no food or body issues, and I will never do to them what my mom did to me. Guest guest
Hi Cera, Wow, that's quite a history. I thought my family had issues with food, but nothing like that. Body issues at 6 years old . My heart goes out to you. You're right about children wanting to emulate their parents because " being like Mum or Dad " is cool and " will make them love me more " . Like Devyn, I'm trying hard to find ways not to pass my issues on to my daughter. It scares me to think that I could have such a negative effect on someone who I love more than life. It is a damn good reason to beat these issues once and for all. Thank you Phoenix
Guest guest
Hello and congratulations on your weight loss success thus far. The circuit training you speak of could be used as your cardio if it is intense enough. If you do this continue to do the weights as per the BFL outline. If the cardio class is not intense enough to effect a " 10 " effort then use it as additional activity and do the 20 minute HIIT for your fatburning cardio. If you do the eating correctly you are going to lose weight either way. No changes from the belly button up, but my lower body needs the most work, so I'm not complaining. > > Today's huge milestone? Guest guest
Welcome!!! Great job on your progress this far! You sound very motivated and ready! I'm not sure about your circut class, I'm afraid if you use it in place of your cardio, your muscles will be overworked and will not have enough time to recover. There are people on this board that know way more than I do about BFL, so I'm sure you will be able to find your answer. Keep us posted on your progress! Much thanks to your husband for his service to our country. > Hello all! > > I've been lurking for a LONG time and have adopted many BFL philosophies into my life in the past couple of months. > > In the past 2 months I've lost 10 pounds of scale weight, about 1.5% bodyfat, 1.5 inches on my abdomen, 1.5 inches on my waist, 1.5 inches on my thigh, and half an inch on my calf. Guest guest
Hi , You might want to check out Margaret's database at: Joint Replacement/database?method=reportRows & tbl=3 Group members record their experiences, including surgeon's name and type of surgery. Guest guest
and K.T. My orgininal OS Dr. A. recomended my OS Dr. W. for revision. He was the head of the department and my OS always went to him with questions. Now Dr. W. is my OS because he has done both my shoulder replacements and the revision. Dr. A. only has the original LTHR, which is great after almost 8 years. Experience and good results and the respect of other doctors are good reasons to go with a particular doc. Then if you like him or her, go for it. It is never a good idea to use an OS that you do not like or feel that he is giving you 100% Good luck. I thought they > were > supposed to last awhile. They last as long as they last. It's rarely the prothesis that wears out for a young 'un. The connection between bone and metal, or between bone, cement and metal is what is more likely to give. I got five years out of my first THR, and almost 6 out of the revision of stem and cup (I'm having my second revision in May, at the age of 36). A friend of mine, who is now 44 has had her hip for 22 years, and she's just starting to think it's time to look at revision in the next couple of years. You just can't tell. You've got so many variables: your bone condition and body, your level of activity, and, well, luck involved. That's above and beyond things like suitability of the prothesis that's used, and the skill of the surgeon, and how carefully and successfully you recuperated. The statistics for longevity don't really reflect the young THR patients. A 20-something is almost certainly going to work their new hip harder than a 70-something (no offence intended to the super-active older people here, or the more laid back young ones). Has anyone seen any numbers, ever, for failure rates for people under 40? All you can really do is treat it well, cross your fingers, and hope you're one of the lucky 20 years crew. Guest guest
I'm in a lot of pain and, it isn't the hip. The hip is fine but, I have severe pain in another place that was there before surgery and, subsided afterwards but, wasn't gone completely, it was a lot better though. But, since My fall it has gotten significantly worse and, I don't know what to do. Connie juneflower60@... writes: Hi Connie, I just wanted to welcome you to this group . Guest guest
After my surgery, I felt funny things and, I told people, they thought I was imagining it. I thought it was it was the new hip I was feeling, it felt like it was poking me. The feeling finally went away. If I catch my leg on something, I feel a really bad pull and, feel like I am pulling my leg off. It is awful. I hope the Dr. can help you. My pain is in the groin and, I don't know what is causing it. I tried ice and, that doesn't do much, heat helps. And the pool is nice, I don't feel much pain in the pool. Guest guest
After surgery it was a struggle, I just crawled up them sometimes. Going down isn't too bad, I just take it one step at a time. At work, I won't take the stairs up because, they are too difficult. A few stairs aren't too bad. Before we moved, We had stairs and, it was okay for the most part but, the past few months have been really hard. Getting in and out of cars is not as bad as when I first had surgery. I have to sometimes just lift my leg myself to get it in the car. My biggest problem right now is getting off the bed. Everything else is a piece of cake compared to that, it is very painful to get out of it. Connie juneflower60@... writes: Hi Connie, I was wondering how are you when you walked up and down stairs?
