Guest guest
This has been huge for my child. We have done 4 rounds (of 36 sessions) so far. Not only did it improve engagement, attention, focus. It also stabilized his mood swings, improved his language, and made him happier. He used to have these fits that came out of nowhere.... now those internal meltdowns are history. We still have more work but I love how far we have come in the last 3 years. Don't worry if your child is somewhat unmanageable. Mine was pretty bad but over time they adjust and then start loving it. Our doctor is affliated with this organization http://www.crossroadsinstitute.org/home.html I think that different organizations use different protocols. But I'm only familar with this one and it worked for my son. The founder of this organization is Curtis Cripe. He has also written a book on the subject. My only gripe is this Crossroads Institute seems to be a bit disorganized.... also it's pricy. I'm recommending neurofeedback to everyone with an Autistic kid. I believe it's a major piece of the puzzle. We've done ABA for years with slow results. Neurofeedback was much more dramatic. Now we are still doing ABA but getting better outcomes. Guest guest
Hi Jill: Thanks for your very helpful feedback. I really appreciate it. I am wondering, when did you start the neurofeedback therapy for your son? I wonder if there is a more ideal time to start. My son is turning 5yo. Thanks much, > > > > Has anyone tried neurofeedback therapy? Guest guest
Hi Jill, we are also digging into to know which type of neurofeedback help my child. Can you advise if the child need to be more higher function to have more good results with neurofeedback or more with ADHD or ADD type? We used to do low frequency EEG, with Orthmer, and also try several sessions of different types, my child is very sensitive, she can get irritated with 1 session, more moody, and with sleep disturbance.. tks much, Corinna From: melody_autumn06 Sent: Thursday, March 31, 2011 12:29 PM autism Subject: Re: Neurofeedback/Biofeedback therapy? Guest guest
Sorry. I haven't been online in a while. Some neurofeedback centers will only work with high functioning kids. I know this because I learned about NFD when my son was young but no one would take him because he has limited language. The group I finally started with, took him even though he still had limited language and when we started, he was also very aggressive, self-injurious, and destructive. We started with short sessions and used lots of reinforcement. We stopped after a few weeks to regroup because it wasn't working very well. They changed the activities that he was doing to watching movies and made some other adjustments so it wasn't so hard for him. It wasn't long before we started seeing success and was able to increase the length of the sessions. His aggression went down down down. His attention and learning went up up up. It sounds like some adjustments need to be made with your son's program as well. A credible center should develop an individualized treatment protocol based on his baseline QEEG. Then you need to work with them to figure out how to build this program in such a way that your son can learn to tolerate it and then eventually enjuoy it. Guest guest
The sooner the better. I was unable to get a neurotherapy program started until my son was 12 years old. How I wish I was able to find a provider sooner. I can't imagine how much heartache would have been avoided. Not to mention that my son would not be blind in one eye if we had resolved the self-injurious behavior sooner. Jill > > > > > > Has anyone tried neurofeedback therapy? Guest guest
It is individualized treatment for each child based on their QEEG baseline assessment. It is non-invasive and safer than meds because you are not changing their brain chemistry but instead are training the brain to come into balance. I suggest you read the materials on various websites and then talk to different providers to get his information. Jill > > > > > > Has anyone tried neurofeedback therapy? Guest guest
I can only address what my provider does based on my son's individualized treatment plan. After my son has his current assessment including a qeeg which maps his brain functioning, a treatment protocol is developed. Then my son receives 36 sessions of neurofeedback. Since my son is limited in his skills, he watches a video or plays a simple game on a computer while listening to modulated music and while electrodes are attached to various places. the electrodes deliver appropriate signals and also receives data on how his brain is functioning. The game or video fades in or out depending on the treatment plan and his brain signals. I am sure the description for treatment will vary based on the patient and the provider. Again, I don't know if all neurotherapy is beneficial. I just know the version that I found has produced very very good results for my son when nothing else worked. I think it is important for parents to consider this treatment especially for kids with extreme behavior which does not respond to other treatments.... or to get them off meds which is not a good long-term solution for anyone. But obviously it'll take work. It took me several years before we discovered this and I totally give the credit to God for bringing us this resource. Guest guest
Thanks Jill. I appreciate your knowledge and experience. I have twin boys both diagnosed with Autism. I'm always looking for alternatives to meds.
